The short answer
US 1 is 2.25mm. It is the size most sock patterns land on, and it is below where every interchangeable needle set stops - the widest-reaching set we list starts at US 2 (2.75mm), so if you own a set it almost certainly cannot knit socks. Buy a 32in fixed circular if you want one needle that does a whole pair by magic loop; buy 6in double points if you were taught that way or you are closing a mitten thumb. Choose bamboo over steel if your sock yarn is slippery, which most superwash is. Skip straights at this size: nearly everything knitted at 2.25mm is worked in the round.

ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needle, US 1 (2.25mm), 32in
ChiaoGoo · Best for a pair of socks on one needle, by magic loop
Sharp stainless tips at 2.25mm on a memory-free cable long enough for magic loop - the one needle that does a whole pair of socks.
- Size
- US 1 (2.25mm)
- Length
- 32in (81cm)
- Tip material
- Surgical stainless steel, satin-sheen finish
- Tips
- Lace tips, machine-precisioned
- Cable
- Memory-free multi-strand steel, nylon coated, red
- Model
- 7032-1
Who it suits
Anyone knitting socks who would rather not juggle five double points, and anyone working fine yarn in the round.
Why it is here
US 1 (2.25mm) surgical stainless tips, 32in (81cm), model 7032-1, on ChiaoGoo's memory-free multi-strand steel cable with a nylon coat. Two specifications make it the default. The tips are the lace profile, machine-precisioned, which matters more at 2.25mm than at any larger size because sock fabric is dense and a blunt tip skates off a tight stitch instead of entering it. And 32 inches is the length magic loop wants - long enough to pull a loop of cable through the middle of the round without fighting it. The memory-free cable is not marketing here: a cord that holds its packaging coil makes magic loop genuinely unpleasant.
What you give up
Steel at this gauge is slick, and slippery superwash sock yarn can slide off an idle tip - push the work to the middle of the cable before you set it down. Magic loop also takes an evening to learn, which is a real cost if you have a pattern waiting.

ChiaoGoo Red 6in Stainless Double Point Needles, US 1 (2.25mm)
ChiaoGoo · Best for socks and mittens the traditional way
Five steel double points at 2.25mm with points sharp enough to work a tight sock gauge without splitting the ply.
- Size
- US 1 (2.25mm)
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Surgical stainless steel, satin-sheen finish
- Points
- Sharp
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
Who it suits
Anyone taught on double points, and anyone knitting mitten thumbs, glove fingers or a sock toe.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) surgical stainless double points at US 1 (2.25mm) with the satin-sheen finish and sharp points. Six inches is the right length for sock-circumference work: long enough to hold a third of the stitches comfortably, short enough not to catch on everything as the needles hang out of the fabric. The sharp point is what lets you work the k2tog and ssk of a gusset without splitting a plied sock yarn, which is the single most common frustration at this gauge.
What you give up
Double points are fiddly to learn and there is a ladder of loose stitches at each needle junction until you work out how to avoid it. Slick steel also makes a dropped needle more likely in the early rounds.

ChiaoGoo Patina Bamboo Double Point Needles, US 1 (2.25mm), 6in
ChiaoGoo · Best for superwash sock yarn and silk blends
The same 2.25mm double point in Moso bamboo - grip rather than speed, which is what slippery superwash sock yarn needs.
- Size
- US 1 (2.25mm)
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Moso bamboo, patina finish (obtained with thermal heat)
- Tips
- Precisely tapered, hand-crafted
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
- Model
- 1036-1
Who it suits
Anyone whose stitches keep sliding off steel, anyone learning double points, and anyone working a slick superwash merino.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) Moso bamboo double points at US 1 (2.25mm), patina finish obtained with thermal heat, precisely tapered hand-crafted tips, model 1036-1. Nearly all sock yarn is superwash treated, and the superwash process smooths the fiber scales - which makes the yarn slippery as well as washable. Bamboo has enough surface friction to hold those stitches where steel lets them travel. At 2mm, bamboo is marginal because the needle is thin enough to flex and break; by 2.25mm it is a practical material, which is why ChiaoGoo's bamboo double points start at this size.
What you give up
Slower than steel, and the tips are semi-sharp rather than sharp, so tight decreases take a little more work. Bamboo at this diameter will still snap if you sit on it.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 1 (2.25mm), 36in
Clover · Best for trying magic loop without spending much
Bamboo at 2.25mm on a 36in cord - the cheapest way into magic loop, and the warmest needle on the page.
- Size
- US 1 (2.25mm)
- Length
- 36in
- Material
- Bamboo
- Format
- Fixed circular
- Line
- Takumi bamboo circulars, sold in 16in to 48in lengths
Who it suits
Anyone who wants to find out whether magic loop suits them before committing, and anyone who prefers a warm needle.
Why it is here
US 1 (2.25mm) bamboo, 36in, from the Takumi circular line Clover sells in 16in through 48in. Thirty-six inches is generous for magic loop - more cable than the 32in minimum, which some people prefer because the loops pull through with less resistance. Bamboo grips the yarn, warms to the hand and is the quietest needle here, and at this price the experiment costs very little.
What you give up
A bamboo join is never as smooth as a machined steel one, and at 2.25mm a fine sock yarn finds every imperfection - expect the occasional snag. The tips are also blunter than the ChiaoGoo, which you notice on gusset decreases.

ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace 6in Double Point Set (US 0-3)
ChiaoGoo · Best for owning the whole sock range at once
Six sizes of steel double points in one case, covering the whole sock range that interchangeable sets miss.
- Sizes
- US 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3
- Metric
- 2.0, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3.0 and 3.25mm
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Surgical stainless steel
- Points
- Sharp
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
Who it suits
Anyone past their first pair, and anyone whose gauge swatch keeps landing between sizes.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) surgical stainless double points with sharp points, in US 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 - that is 2.0, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3.0 and 3.25mm. The half sizes are the reason to buy it. Sock gauge is unusually unforgiving because a sock has to fit a foot, and the useful adjustment at this end of the scale is a quarter of a millimeter rather than a half. Buying six single sets separately costs more than this case, and no interchangeable set covers this band at all.
What you give up
A significant outlay for someone who has knitted one pair of socks, and double points only - no cable, so magic loop and two-circulars are both out. All steel, with the grip problem that implies on superwash.

Susan Bates Silvalume Single Point Needles, US 1 (2.25mm), 14in
Susan Bates · Best for flat swatches, and very little else
Fourteen-inch aluminum straights at 2.25mm - a format that fits almost nothing people knit at this size.
- Size
- US 1 (2.25mm)
- Length
- 14in
- Material
- Anodized aluminum
- Format
- Single point - flat knitting only
- Also offered
- 10in at this size
Who it suits
Nobody knitting socks, mittens or lace in the round - which is nearly everybody at 2.25mm.
Why it is here
A pair of 14in anodized aluminum single points at US 1 (2.25mm). This is the honest skip, and it is a format problem rather than a material one: aluminum holds its shape well at fine gauges and the price is low. The trouble is that almost everything knitted at 2.25mm is worked in the round - socks, mittens, glove fingers, hat crowns - and a straight needle cannot do that. At roughly eight stitches to the inch a 14in straight will hold a lot of stitches, so if you genuinely are knitting a flat fine-gauge piece it works; that is a narrow case.
What you give up
Buy them if you swatch flat a lot or you are knitting a fine flat scarf. For everything else, the money is better spent on the 32in circular above, which does both.

Where 2.25mm sits
US 1 is a boundary size. The Craft Yarn Council puts lace (category 0) at 1.5 to 2.25mm and super fine (category 1, which is where sock and fingering yarn live) at 2.25 to 3.25mm - so 2.25mm is the exact number both bands share, the finest needle a fingering yarn is expected to use and the thickest a lace yarn is.
| US size | Metric | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| US 000 | 1.5mm | Lace weight, and crochet-thread territory |
| US 0 | 2.0mm | Lace weight; a very dense sock |
| US 1 | 2.25mm | The lace / fingering boundary - the standard sock size |
| US 1.5 | 2.5mm | The other common sock size |
| US 2 | 2.75mm | A looser sock; where the widest sets begin |
| US 3 | 3.25mm | The top of super fine - fine shawls and baby garments |
Those steps are a quarter of a millimeter apart, which is the smallest interval anywhere on the needle scale, and it is small enough that most people cannot tell two adjacent needles apart by eye. Buy on the millimeter figure and keep a needle gauge in the project bag - at this end of the scale an unmarked needle is an unknown needle.
Best US size 0 knitting needles covers 2mm, and best US size 3 knitting needles covers 3.25mm, which are the built sizes either side.
No interchangeable set goes this fine
This is the practical fact that sends most people to this page, and it catches them out after they have already bought a set.
| Set | Tip range | US 1 included? |
|---|---|---|
| ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete | US 2-15 (2.75-10mm) | No - starts at 2.75mm |
| addi Click Turbo | US 4-15 (3.5-10mm) | No - starts at 3.5mm |
| Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe | US 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm) | No - starts at 3.5mm |
The reason is structural rather than commercial. An interchangeable tip needs a screw or click join inside the needle, and below about 2.75mm there is not enough metal around that join to make it strong - the tip would be mostly hole. So the fine sizes are sold as fixed circulars and double points, and they always will be.
Knitting needle sets vs single needles has the broader argument, and fixed vs interchangeable circular needles covers what you give up going fixed.
Format matters more than material here
At most sizes the first question is bamboo or metal. At 2.25mm the first question is which format, because almost everything knitted at this gauge is a small tube - a sock leg, a mitten, a glove finger - and there are three different ways to knit a small tube.
- Double points. Four or five short needles, stitches divided across three or four of them. The traditional method, the cheapest entry, and the fiddliest to learn. Six inches is the right length for socks.
- Magic loop. One long circular, 32in or more, with a loop of cable pulled out at two points. One needle, nothing to drop, and the method most sock knitters move to eventually - best needles for magic loop covers it properly.
- Two circulars. Two shorter circulars, half the stitches on each. Less popular than it was, still useful if you want to knit two socks at a time.
- Nine-inch circulars. A very short circular that knits a sock leg with no loop at all. Fast, and hard on the hands because the tips are stubby.
- Straights. Not usable for a tube at all, which is why they are the skip pick above.
Best circular needles for socks and magic loop vs double pointed needles both go further into the choice. The short version: if you have never knitted a sock, borrow or buy double points first because every pattern is written for them, then try magic loop on the second pair.
Material at 2.25mm
Material still matters, it just comes second - and the argument runs the opposite way from the one at chunky sizes, where grip is everything.
- Steel and aluminum hold their shape. At 2.25mm a needle is thin enough to flex under tension, and a flexing needle makes uneven stitches. Metal is stiff enough that this is not a consideration.
- Bamboo grips, and most sock yarn needs that. Nearly all sock yarn is superwash treated, and that treatment smooths the fiber scales to make it machine washable - which also makes it slippery. Bamboo holds those stitches.
- Bamboo becomes viable at 2.25mm. At 2.0mm it is marginal and snaps; ChiaoGoo's own bamboo double points start at US 1, which is a fair indication of where the material becomes practical.
- Sharp tips matter more than usual. Sock fabric is knitted dense on purpose, so the needle has to enter stitches that are already tight. A blunt tip skates off or splits the ply.
- Warmth is a real preference at this gauge. Fine knitting is slow, so you hold the needle for a long time. Some people simply prefer bamboo for that, and it is a perfectly good reason.
Bamboo vs metal knitting needles sets out the whole comparison across sizes.
What people knit at 2.25mm
- Socks, which is the overwhelming majority of use at this size. Sock patterns land at 2.25 or 2.5mm because a dense fabric wears far longer than a loose one.
- Mittens and gloves in fingering yarn, where the same density keeps the wind out.
- Fine shawls in fingering, knitted at the yarn's own gauge rather than opened out - a different fabric from a lace shawl.
- Baby garments in fingering, which is the traditional weight for heirloom knitting.
- Colorwork at a fine gauge, where more stitches per inch means more resolution in the motif.
- Lace weight knitted dense, for a firm fabric rather than an open one - though most lace knitting uses a much larger needle on purpose.
For what to put on the needle, best yarn for socks explains why the nylon content decides a sock yarn, and best yarn for mittens and gloves covers the other main use.
The gauge socks actually want
Sock gauge is tighter than the ball band suggests, and this trips up people coming from garment knitting.
| Yarn | Weight | Band suggests | Sock patterns use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patons Kroy Socks | 1 Super Fine | 2.25-3.25mm | 2.25-2.5mm |
| Cascade 220 Superwash Merino | Worsted | US 7 (4.5mm) | Not a sock yarn |
| Rowan Kidsilk Haze | Lace | 1.5-2.25mm on the band | Usually knitted far looser |
The standard puts super fine at 27 to 32 stitches over four inches on 2.25 to 3.25mm needles. Most sock patterns sit at the fine end of that - eight stitches to the inch or more - because the heel and the ball of the foot abrade constantly, and a dense fabric survives it. If your swatch is looser than the pattern, go down rather than up: at this size the next step is only a quarter of a millimeter.
Swatch in the round rather than flat if you can. Most knitters purl at a different tension from the way they knit, so a flat swatch and a sock worked in the round give different numbers from the same needle. Knitting gauge and swatching has the full method.
Buying without getting the wrong needle
- Buy on the millimeter figure. US 1 is 2.25mm. The sizes either side are 2.0mm and 2.5mm, and quarter-millimeter steps are mixed up in listings constantly.
- Watch the half sizes. US 1.5 (2.5mm) and US 2.5 (3.0mm) exist and are common in sock knitting. A listing that says 'size 1' and '2.5mm' is contradicting itself - trust neither and find another.
- Check the cable length in the title rather than the photo. Magic loop needs 32in or more; a 16in circular at this size is for hat brims and will not work.
- Count the needles in a double-point pack. Sets of four and sets of five are both sold, and a pattern written for five needles is awkward on four.
- Metric-only listings are normal from European brands. A needle sold as 2.25mm with no US number is a US 1.
- Your interchangeable set does not have this size. Check the case before you buy a tip that does not exist.
How we picked
Ranked on the published specification in the order that matters at this gauge: format first, then tip sharpness and cable behavior, then material, then length. Every figure above comes from the manufacturer's own product line documentation or, where a maker does not publish it, from the retail listing - both are cited below. We have not knitted with any of these needles and we make no claim about how they feel; how we pick explains what we do instead.
Questions people actually ask
What size is a US 1 knitting needle in mm?
US 1 is 2.25mm. The sizes either side are US 0 at 2.0mm and US 1.5 at 2.5mm, so the steps at this end of the scale are a quarter of a millimeter - the smallest interval anywhere on the needle scale.
What yarn do you use with size 1 needles?
Fingering and sock yarn, mostly. The Craft Yarn Council puts super fine (category 1) at 2.25 to 3.25mm and lace (category 0) at 1.5 to 2.25mm, so 2.25mm is the boundary the two bands share - it is the finest needle a fingering yarn expects and the thickest a lace yarn does.
Do interchangeable needle sets include US 1?
None of the three we list. The ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete starts at US 2 (2.75mm), and both the addi Click Turbo and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe start at US 4 (3.5mm). An interchangeable tip needs a join inside the needle, and below about 2.75mm there is not enough metal around it - so fine sizes are sold as fixed circulars and double points.
What needle size are socks knitted on?
Usually 2.25mm (US 1) or 2.5mm (US 1.5). The standard allows 2.25 to 3.25mm for sock yarn, but most patterns sit at the fine end because the heel and the ball of the foot abrade constantly, and a denser fabric lasts much longer.
Should I use double points or magic loop at this size?
Double points first, if you have never knitted a sock - every sock pattern is written for them and the instructions will match what is in your hands. Magic loop needs one 32in or longer circular, has nothing to drop, and is where most sock knitters end up by the second or third pair.
Are bamboo or metal needles better at 2.25mm?
Bamboo if your yarn is slippery, metal if your tension is loose or you want speed. Nearly all sock yarn is superwash treated, which smooths the fiber and makes it slick, and bamboo grips those stitches. Metal is stiffer, sharper at the tip and faster - and at this diameter stiffness is worth something, because a thin needle can flex under tension.
What cable length do I need for magic loop at US 1?
Thirty-two inches as a minimum and 36 or 40 inches if you want it comfortable. Magic loop works by pulling a loop of cable out at two points in the round, and a short cord makes that a fight. A memory-free cable matters more here than at any other size, because a coiled cord resists being looped.
Is US 1 the same as 2.25mm?
Yes. A needle sold as 2.25mm with no US number is a US 1, which is normal for European brands. Buy on the millimeter figure - with quarter-millimeter steps at this end of the scale, it is the only number that cannot be misread.
