The short answer
US 2 is 2.75mm, and it is the finest size any interchangeable needle set reaches - the ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete starts exactly here, while the addi Click Turbo and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe both start at US 4. That makes this the line where separate needles stop being optional: at 2.75mm you can use a set, and one step finer you cannot. It is also the looser of the two common sock sizes - 2.25mm gives a denser sock that lasts longer, 2.75mm a faster, softer one that wears through sooner. Buy the set if you will knit at several fine sizes; buy a 32in fixed circular for magic loop; buy 6in double points if your pattern is written for them, in bamboo if your sock yarn is slippery.

ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Interchangeable Set (Complete, 5in tips)
ChiaoGoo · Best for anyone who will knit at more than one fine size
Thirteen pairs of surgical stainless lace tips on memory-free red nylon-coated steel cables, with a lifeline hole through every tip.
- Tips
- 13 pairs, 5in (13cm), US 2-15 (2.75-10mm)
- Tip material
- Surgical-grade stainless steel, lace point
- Cables
- Multi-strand steel core, red nylon coating; 2 x 14in, 2 x 22in, 2 x 30in
- Notable
- Lifeline hole in each tip; memory-free cable
- Also included
- Stitch markers, two keys, needle gauge, stoppers, connector, case
Who it suits
Anyone who already owns no set, knits socks and garments both, or is deciding between a set and a drawer of single circulars.
Why it is here
Tips from US 2 to 15 (2.75-10mm) with 5in tips on the memory-free Red Lace cable system. Every other set we cover starts at US 4 (3.5mm), so this is the single product that turns 2.75mm from a separate purchase into a tip you already own. That matters more at this size than anywhere else on the scale: below it you are buying fixed circulars whether you like it or not, and at 2.75mm you get a choice for the first time.
What you give up
A large upfront price if all you want is one pair of socks, and 5in tips are short for large hands on a fine gauge. The set also stops here - it will not help you at US 1 or US 0, which is where most sock patterns actually sit.

ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needle, US 2 (2.75mm), 32in
ChiaoGoo · Best for a pair of socks by magic loop
Sharp stainless tips at 2.75mm on a 32in memory-free cable - the fixed circular to buy if you want magic loop without touching your set.
- Size
- US 2 (2.75mm)
- Length
- 32in (81cm)
- Tip material
- Surgical stainless steel, satin-sheen finish
- Tips
- Lace tips, machine-precisioned
- Cable
- Memory-free multi-strand steel, nylon coated, red
- Model
- 7032-2
Who it suits
Anyone knitting socks on one needle, and anyone who wants the sharp tips without the price of the whole case.
Why it is here
US 2 (2.75mm) surgical stainless tips, 32in (81cm), model 7032-2, on ChiaoGoo's memory-free multi-strand steel cable with a nylon coat. The machine-precisioned lace tips matter at this gauge because sock fabric is dense by design, and a blunt tip skates off a tight stitch rather than entering it. Thirty-two inches is the length magic loop wants - short enough to control, long enough to pull a loop through without a fight.
What you give up
One size and one length for roughly a third of the price of the set above, which is good value only if 2.75mm is the size you actually knit. Slick steel also sheds slippery superwash stitches off an idle tip.

ChiaoGoo Red 6in Stainless Double Point Needles, US 2 (2.75mm)
ChiaoGoo · Best for socks and mittens the traditional way
Steel double points at 2.75mm - the standard sock needle in the size most patterns offer as the looser option.
- Size
- US 2 (2.75mm)
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Surgical stainless steel, satin-sheen finish
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
- Model
- 6006-2
Who it suits
Anyone taught on double points, and anyone working a mitten thumb, a glove finger or a sock toe.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) surgical stainless double points at US 2 (2.75mm), model 6006-2, with the satin-sheen finish. Six inches is right for sock work: long enough to hold a third of the stitches without crowding, short enough that the idle needles are not constantly catching. Every sock pattern is written for double points, so this is the format that matches the instructions in front of you.
What you give up
Double points take practice, and there is a ladder of loose stitches at each needle junction until your technique settles. Steel is also the slickest surface here, which makes the first few rounds easier to drop.

ChiaoGoo Patina Bamboo Double Point Needles, US 2 (2.75mm), 6in
ChiaoGoo · Best for superwash sock yarn and silk blends
The 2.75mm double point in Moso bamboo - the top of the size range ChiaoGoo makes its bamboo double points in.
- Size
- US 2 (2.75mm)
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Moso bamboo, patina finish (obtained with thermal heat)
- Tips
- Precisely tapered, hand-crafted, semi-sharp
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
- Range
- ChiaoGoo lists its 6in patina bamboo double points in sizes 1 to 2
Who it suits
Anyone whose stitches keep sliding off steel, and anyone learning double points for the first time.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) Moso bamboo double points at US 2 (2.75mm), patina finish obtained with thermal heat, precisely tapered hand-crafted tips. Almost all sock yarn is superwash treated, and the treatment that makes it machine washable also smooths the fiber and makes it slippery. Bamboo has the surface friction to hold those stitches where steel lets them travel - which is why this is the better learning needle even though it is slower.
What you give up
Semi-sharp rather than sharp, so gusset decreases take a little more work than on the steel. ChiaoGoo lists its 6in patina bamboo double points only in sizes 1 to 2, so there is no bamboo option a size up.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 2 (2.75mm), 16in
Clover · Best for hat brims, cuffs and small circumferences
Bamboo at 2.75mm on a 16in cord - a hat-brim and cuff length rather than a sock length, at the lowest price here.
- Size
- US 2 (2.75mm)
- Length
- 16in
- Material
- Bamboo
- Format
- Fixed circular
- Line
- Takumi bamboo circulars, sold in 16in to 48in lengths
Who it suits
Anyone knitting a fine-gauge hat brim, a baby garment or a sleeve cuff in the round.
Why it is here
US 2 (2.75mm) bamboo, 16in, from the Takumi circular line Clover sells in 16in through 48in. Sixteen inches is the shortest practical circular length and it has one real job: knitting a tube roughly 16 inches around or larger, which is a hat, a cuff or a baby body rather than a sock. At this price it is the cheapest way to own the size, and bamboo grips the fine yarn that fine-gauge hats are made from.
What you give up
Sixteen inches cannot do magic loop - the cable is far too short to pull a loop through, so this is not a sock needle. A bamboo join is also never as smooth as a machined steel one, and fine yarn finds every step.

Susan Bates Silvalume Single Point Needles, US 2 (2.75mm), 14in
Susan Bates · Best for flat swatches, and not much else
Fourteen-inch aluminum straights at 2.75mm - the right material in a format that almost nothing at this size needs.
- Size
- US 2 (2.75mm)
- Length
- 14in
- Material
- Anodized aluminum
- Format
- Single point - flat knitting only
- Model
- 11114-2
- Also offered
- 10in at this size
Who it suits
Nobody knitting socks, mittens or fine hats - which is most of what happens at 2.75mm.
Why it is here
A pair of 14in anodized aluminum single points at US 2 (2.75mm), model 11114-2. This is a format problem rather than a material one, and the same one the US 1 page runs into: aluminum holds its shape well at fine gauges and the price is low, but nearly everything knitted at 2.75mm is a tube, and a straight needle cannot knit a tube. Fourteen inches will hold plenty of stitches at roughly seven to eight per inch, so if you genuinely are knitting something flat and fine it works.
What you give up
Worth owning if you swatch flat often or you are knitting a fine flat scarf. For anything else the same money buys most of the 16in circular above, which does both.

Where 2.75mm sits
The Craft Yarn Council puts super fine (category 1, where sock and fingering yarn live) at 2.25 to 3.25mm. US 2 is the middle of that band - not a boundary size like US 1, which sits exactly where lace weight ends, and not the top like US 3.
| US size | Metric | Position in the band |
|---|---|---|
| US 1 | 2.25mm | Bottom - the lace / fingering boundary, the denser sock |
| US 1.5 | 2.5mm | The half step most sock patterns offer as an alternative |
| US 2 | 2.75mm | Middle - the looser sock, and the finest tip any set reaches |
| US 2.5 | 3.0mm | Fine garments and colorwork |
| US 3 | 3.25mm | Top - baby garments, fine shawls |
The steps here are a quarter of a millimeter, the smallest interval on the whole needle scale, and most people cannot tell two adjacent needles apart by eye. Buy on the millimeter figure and keep a needle gauge in the bag - an unmarked fine needle is an unknown needle.
The finest size a set will sell you
This is the fact that makes 2.75mm different from every size below it, and it is worth checking before you buy anything.
| Set | Tip range | US 2 included? |
|---|---|---|
| ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete | US 2-15 (2.75-10mm) | Yes - this is its finest tip |
| addi Click Turbo | US 4-15 (3.5-10mm) | No - starts at 3.5mm |
| Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe | US 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm) | No - starts at 3.5mm |
The reason sets stop around here is structural rather than commercial: an interchangeable tip needs a screw or click join inside the needle, and below roughly 2.75mm there is not enough metal around that join to make it reliable. So 2.75mm is the last size where the set is an option, and 2.25mm is the first where it is not.
Knitting needle sets vs single needles has the broader argument, and fixed vs interchangeable circular needles covers what a fixed circular gives up.
The looser sock size
Most sock patterns offer a choice between about 2.25mm and 2.75mm, and the difference is a real trade rather than a preference.
- 2.25mm (US 1) makes a denser fabric. The heel and the ball of the foot abrade constantly, and tighter stitches wear through later. This is why traditional sock knitting sits at the fine end.
- 2.75mm (US 2) is faster and softer. Fewer stitches per inch means fewer stitches overall, and a slightly looser fabric is more comfortable against the foot from the first wearing.
- The gauge difference compounds. At roughly eight stitches to the inch against seven, a 64-stitch sock becomes a 56-stitch sock - which changes the fit as well as the speed.
- Yarn matters more than the needle here. A sock yarn with 20 to 25 percent nylon survives a loose gauge far better than a pure wool does - best yarn for socks covers why the nylon content is the real decision.
- Swatch in the round, not flat. Most knitters purl at a different tension from the way they knit, so a flat swatch will not predict a sock.
If you are new to socks, start at the size your pattern names and change it only after a finished pair tells you something. Knitting gauge and swatching has the method.
Format, and what each one is actually for
At this gauge the format question comes before the material question, because almost everything knitted at 2.75mm is a small tube and there are several ways to knit one.
- Double points. Four or five short needles with the stitches divided across them. What every sock pattern is written for, the cheapest entry, and the fiddliest to learn.
- Magic loop. One circular of 32in or more, with a loop of cable pulled out at two points. One needle, nothing to drop - best needles for magic loop covers the technique.
- Two circulars. Half the stitches on each of two shorter circulars, which is also the route to two socks at a time.
- A 16in circular. Not a sock needle - the cable is too short to loop. It is for hat brims, cuffs and baby bodies, which is a genuinely useful second job at this size.
- Straights. Cannot knit a tube at all, which is why they are the skip pick above.
Best circular needles for socks and magic loop vs double pointed needles both go further. If you knit socks often enough to want every size in the band, the ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace double point set covers US 0 through 3 in one case.
Material at 2.75mm
- Steel and aluminum stay straight. A fine needle flexes under tension and a flexing needle makes uneven stitches. Metal is stiff enough that this stops being a consideration.
- Bamboo grips, and superwash sock yarn needs that. The superwash treatment smooths the fiber scales to make the yarn machine washable, and smooth fiber slides.
- Bamboo runs out here. ChiaoGoo lists its 6in patina bamboo double points in sizes 1 to 2 only, so 2.75mm is the top of the bamboo range in that format.
- Sharp tips earn their keep. Sock fabric is dense on purpose, so the needle has to enter stitches that are already tight.
- Weight is irrelevant at this size, unlike the jumbo end of the scale where it decides everything.
Bamboo vs metal knitting needles sets out the whole comparison.
What people knit at 2.75mm
- Socks, at the looser of the two standard gauges.
- Mittens and gloves in fingering weight, where a slightly open fabric is warmer for the weight.
- Baby garments in fingering or fine DK - best yarn for baby hats covers the yarn side.
- Fine-gauge colorwork, where more stitches per inch gives a motif more resolution.
- Lightweight fingering sweaters, the slowest garment in knitting and the one that drapes best.
- Ribbed cuffs and brims on a garment knitted at a larger size - going down two sizes for ribbing is standard, and 2.75mm is the cuff size for a DK garment.
Buying without getting the wrong needle
- Buy on the millimeter figure. US 2 is 2.75mm. The sizes either side are 2.5mm and 3.0mm, and quarter-millimeter steps get mixed up in listings constantly.
- US 2 is not US 2.5. Both exist, both are common in sock knitting, and a listing naming one number and one metric figure that do not match is a listing to skip.
- Check the cable length in the title. Magic loop needs 32in or more; 16in is a hat length and will not loop.
- Count the needles in a double-point pack. Sets of four and sets of five are both sold, and a pattern written for five is awkward on four.
- Metric-only listings are normal from European brands. A needle sold as 2.75mm with no US number is a US 2.
- If you own the ChiaoGoo TWIST Complete, you have this size already. No other set we list does.
How we picked
Ranked on the specification that matters most at this gauge - whether the size is reachable at all from a set you may already own - then on format, tip sharpness and cable behavior, then material. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's published product line documentation or, where a maker does not publish it, from the retail listing; both are cited below. We have not knitted with any of these needles and make no claim about how they feel. How we pick explains the method.
Questions people actually ask
What size is a US 2 knitting needle in mm?
US 2 is 2.75mm. The sizes either side are US 1.5 at 2.5mm and US 2.5 at 3.0mm, so the steps here are a quarter of a millimeter - the smallest interval on the needle scale.
Do interchangeable needle sets include US 2?
One of the three we list does. The ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete runs US 2 to 15 (2.75-10mm), so 2.75mm is its finest tip. The addi Click Turbo and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe both start at US 4 (3.5mm) and no tip exists to add below that.
What yarn do you use with size 2 needles?
Fingering and sock yarn. The Craft Yarn Council puts super fine, category 1, at 2.25 to 3.25mm, and 2.75mm is the middle of that band. It also works as the ribbing size for a DK garment, since going down two sizes for cuffs and brims is standard.
Should I knit socks on US 1 or US 2?
US 1 (2.25mm) if you want the socks to last, US 2 (2.75mm) if you want them finished sooner and slightly softer. The denser fabric at 2.25mm wears through later at the heel and ball of the foot, which is why traditional sock knitting sits at the fine end - but a yarn with 20 to 25 percent nylon copes well at either.
Is US 2 the same as 2.75mm?
Yes. A needle sold as 2.75mm with no US number is a US 2, which is normal for European brands. With quarter-millimeter steps at this end of the scale the millimeter figure is the only number that cannot be misread.
Can you knit socks on a 16 inch circular needle?
No. Sixteen inches is the shortest practical circular length and its cable is far too short to pull a magic loop through, so it cannot work a sock-sized tube. A 16in circular at this size is for hat brims, cuffs and baby bodies. For socks on one needle you want 32in or longer.
Are bamboo or metal needles better at 2.75mm?
Bamboo if your yarn is slippery, metal if you want speed and sharp tips. Nearly all sock yarn is superwash treated, which smooths the fiber and makes it slide, and bamboo grips it. Note that 2.75mm is the top of the range ChiaoGoo makes its 6in patina bamboo double points in, so there is no bamboo step up in that format.
Why do interchangeable sets stop at this size?
Because of the join. An interchangeable tip has a screw or click fitting inside the needle, and below about 2.75mm there is not enough metal around that fitting for it to hold reliably - the tip would be mostly hole. That is why the finer sizes are sold only as fixed circulars and double points.
