Fixed vs Interchangeable Circular Needles
A set looks like the grown-up purchase. It is, eventually - and it has a gap at the bottom nobody mentions.

The short answer
Buy fixed circulars until you own three or four, then buy a set. A set is better value per size and far better for travel, but only if the sizes you actually knit are inside it - and two of the three premium sets start at US 4 (3.5mm), so they cannot make sock needles at all. A fixed circular has no join to fail and no size it cannot be made in.
The difference in one paragraph
A fixed circular is one piece: tips and cable permanently joined, one size and one length per pack. An interchangeable set is a box of tips and a box of cables that screw or click together, so any tip can go on any cable.

The gap at the bottom of every set
This is the thing to check before you spend money, and almost no set advertises it. An interchangeable join needs metal around the cable, and below a certain diameter there is not enough needle left to make a reliable one. So sets stop short at the fine end.

Most American sock patterns are written for US 1 to US 3 - 2.25mm to 3.25mm. Two of the three sets above cannot make any of them. If you intend to knit socks, that is either a reason to choose the ChiaoGoo set or a reason to budget separately for fixed circulars, and it is much cheaper to know now. The join, which is the real trade
- Every interchangeable has two joins, and every stitch passes over them.
- A good join is invisible in use. A poor one catches the yarn on every stitch, which is maddening rather than dangerous.
- Screw joins can loosen as you knit, usually at the worst moment. Tightening with the supplied key at the start of each session is the standard habit.
- Click joins avoid the key but are bulkier and cannot be made as small, which is part of why those sets start at 3.5mm.
- A fixed circular has none of this. The tip and cable are one piece, and the only thing that can go wrong is cable memory.

Where fixed circulars stay better
- Very small sizes, which sets often do not make at all.
- Short cables. A 9in or 12in fixed circular exists; an interchangeable cannot be made that short, because the two tips plus joins are longer than the cable.
- A project you will leave on the needle for months. Tying up a set tip for a year is expensive; tying up one cheap fixed circular is not.
- A first needle. Buying a set before you know whether you prefer wood or metal is how people end up with an expensive set they do not like.
A sensible buying order
- One fixed circular in the size your first project needs, 32in.
- Two or three more as patterns demand them. You will learn whether you want wood or metal, sharp or blunt, in the process.
- A set, once you are tired of buying one needle at a time - and chosen to include the sizes you actually knit.
- Fixed circulars again, for whatever the set does not cover. Almost everyone with a set also owns sock needles bought separately.

Questions people actually ask
Are interchangeable needles worth it?
If you knit often and across many sizes, yes - the cost per size is far lower and the whole range travels in one case. If you knit a few projects a year in the same sizes, a handful of fixed circulars is cheaper and has no join to fail.
Can interchangeable needles knit socks?

Do interchangeable needles come apart while knitting?
