The cable is the needle
Tips get all the attention and cables cause all the frustration. Three cable properties are worth checking before you buy anything:
- Memory. Does it hold its packaging coil? A cable with memory fights you continuously and never fully relaxes. Good cables are specified as memory free, and the specification is worth trusting.
- Join smoothness. Where the cable meets the tip there is a step. If it is not smooth, every stitch catches as it passes. This is the single most common complaint about cheap circulars.
- Swivel. Some cables rotate independently of the tip, so turning the work does not wind the cable up. Knitter's Pride specifies 360-degree swivel connectors for exactly this.
A stiff cable can be relaxed temporarily by running it through warm water, and that is a workaround rather than a fix.

A circular cannot knit a circumference much smaller than its own length - which is why a 16in circular cannot do a sleeve cuff. The answer to that is magic loop on a 32in or longer cable, covered in best needles for magic loop.
If you buy one circular, make it 32in. It knits flat, it does sweater bodies, and it does magic loop for anything small.
Tip length, which nobody mentions
Interchangeable tips are usually 4.5in or 5in. On a short cable that matters: 5in tips on a 9in cable leaves very little cable between them, and the whole thing becomes awkward.
Some manufacturers sell shorter tips (often around 3.5in) for exactly this. If you knit a lot of hats in the round, check availability before assuming your set covers it.
Fixed or interchangeable?
Fixed circulars have no join to catch, no join to loosen and no join to come apart - and they are available in sizes below where interchangeable joins can go, which is why sock knitters use them. Interchangeables give you every combination in one case.

Can you knit flat on circular needles?
Yes, exactly as you would on straights - work back and forth and turn at the end of each row. Nothing about the technique changes.
What is the shortest circular needle you can use?
9in circulars exist and work for hats and sleeves, though the tips are very short and some hands find them unusable. Magic loop on a longer cable is the alternative.
Are fixed or interchangeable circulars better?
