How We Pick

Units we claim to have tested: zero. Here is what we do instead.

The short answer

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty hooks. We have not tested any, and we say so. What we do instead is compile the manufacturers' published specifications, compute sizing and yardage from the published craft standard, track live prices with the date attached, and read practitioner discussion for what actually goes wrong with a product - attributed to its source, never presented as ours.

This page exists because the alternative is a claim we cannot substantiate. The publishers we compete with lead with hands-on testing - five needle sets purchased, ten hours per hook, a named designer with a body of work. Those are real credentials and we do not have them.

We could invent them. Plenty of sites do, and it is easy to write, hard for a reader to check, and false. It is also an FTC problem: an endorser has to make truthful, substantiated statements, and a site earning commission on recommendations is an endorser.

So the position is the third one, and it is the only one we can actually stand behind: publish the arithmetic and the specifications, show what things cost right now, and say plainly what we have not done.

What we do

Compile published specifications

Every product on this site carries its manufacturer's own published figures - fiber content, skein weight, yardage, gauge, care instructions, tip material, size range, cable construction. Each product links the source it came from, so you can check it in one click.

Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say so rather than estimating one. Several ergonomic hook makers, for instance, do not publish a handle diameter - which is the specification their product is sold on - and we note that on the page instead of inventing a number.

Compute sizing from the published standard

Hook and needle sizing, yarn weight categories and gauge ranges all come from the Craft Yarn Council Standard Yarn Weight System, reproduced without adjustment. Where we go beyond it - the yardage method, for example - we show the arithmetic so you can run it yourself and disagree with the inputs.

Track live prices

Prices on this site come from a live data layer with a visible last-checked date, refreshed daily. If a price is more than 48 hours old it disappears and the button falls back to "Check price on Amazon" - we would rather show you nothing than a number that has quietly gone stale.

We never type a price into copy. Every price you see on this site is rendered from that layer or is absent.

Read what practitioners report

Where a recurring problem is well documented by people who actually use a product - chenille worming, superwash growth, cable memory - we describe it and attribute it as reported experience. We do not restate someone else's hands-on finding as though it were ours.

What we do not do

  • We do not test products. No hands-on testing, no owned units, no test lab.
  • We do not accept free product. Nothing on this site was sent to us.
  • We do not take sponsored placement. No product appears here because someone paid for it to.
  • We do not invent credentials. No certifications, no expert panel, no medical review, no years of experience.
  • We do not fabricate ratings or reviews. There are no star ratings on this site and no testimonials, because we have no customers and no test results to base either on.

How picks are chosen

The criteria differ by category, and each roundup states its own. The general order:

  1. Does the published specification match the job? A hook set that stops at 6mm cannot be the pick for a chunky blanket, however good it is.
  2. Is it actually available? We only recommend what can be bought. Several yarns that dominate this category are retailer-exclusive, and we name that limitation rather than padding a list with things you cannot get.
  3. What does it cost per unit of use? Yards per gram for yarn, not price per skein. Coverage per set for tools.
  4. What does it give up? Every pick on this site carries a stated trade-off, because a pick with no downside is a pick nobody thought about.
  5. Is there something here nobody should buy? Every roundup carries at least one "skip this" verdict. A page where every option wins has recommended nothing.

How we handle being wrong

We will be. Specifications change, products are discontinued, and we will occasionally misread a source.

  1. Tell us. Email info@worstedandweave.com with the page and what is wrong. A link to the correct source makes it faster.
  2. We check it against the source rather than against our memory of it.
  3. We fix it and update the page's last-updated date. Substantive corrections - a wrong specification, a changed recommendation - are noted on the page.
  4. We do not quietly delete. If a pick was wrong, the page says the pick changed.

How the site is funded

Affiliate commission, and a disclosure appears above the first affiliate link on every page that carries one. Commission never decides a pick or its rank - it cannot, because the picks are made from published specifications before any link is built.

Why this is worth more than a testing claim

Because you can check it. Every specification on this site links to its source. Every calculation shows its working. Every price carries a date. If we get something wrong, you can find out from the page itself.

A testing claim asks you to take someone's word for it. This asks you to check ours - and gives you the means to.
