The short answer
US 6 is a 4.0mm needle, and it is the size almost every interchangeable set includes - so the question is not which set reaches it, but which format you want. Buy a fixed circular if you need 4mm for one project, a set if you have already bought the same size twice, and double points or a long circular if the project is a hat or a sleeve. Pair it with DK, not worsted.

What 4mm is for
In the Craft Yarn Council standard, category 3 light - DK and sport - is worked on 3.75mm to 4.5mm needles. US 6 sits in the middle of that band, which makes it the default DK needle.

Material, at this size
- Bamboo and wood grip. At DK gauge with a superwash merino, that is the difference between knitting and chasing stitches.
- Stainless steel is fast and unforgiving in exactly the same situation.
- Nickel-plated with a blunt point slows down decreases; it is the worst tip profile for lace at any size.
- 4mm is thick enough that wood does not snap, which is not true at 2mm - see best US size 0 knitting needles.

- DK garments. Cardigans and sweaters at a gauge that is quick without being bulky.
- Hats in DK, on a 16in circular or double points.
- Baby knits, where DK is the standard weight.

Buy on millimeters
US 6 is 4.0mm. The US number is a name; the millimeter figure is the physical size, and it is the one printed on the needle you will still own in five years.

What size is a US 6 knitting needle in mm?
4.0mm. It sits between US 5 (3.75mm) and US 7 (4.5mm). Buy on the millimeter figure rather than the US name.
What yarn do you use with US 6 needles?
DK weight. The standard weight system puts category 3 light yarn on 3.75mm to 4.5mm needles, and 4mm is the middle of that band. Worsted on a US 6 makes a dense, stiff fabric.
Do interchangeable needle sets include US 6?
Yes - every set we cover includes 4mm. That is the opposite of the problem at US 0, and it means buying a whole set for this one size is the expensive route.
Can I use US 6 needles for worsted weight yarn?
You can, and the fabric will be dense and stiff with no drape. Worsted's published needle range is 4.5mm to 5.5mm. If 4mm is what you own, buy a DK yarn for it instead.
Are bamboo or metal needles better at 4mm?
Bamboo if your stitches slide off, metal if knitting feels slow. At 4mm wood is thick enough not to snap, so both are safe - it is purely about grip against speed.
