Best US Size 7 Knitting Needles
Four and a half millimeters. Rarely the size a pattern names, often the size your swatch tells you to buy.

The short answer
US 7 is 4.5mm. It sits at the bottom of the published worsted range (4.5 to 5.5mm) and at the top of the DK range, which makes it less a size patterns name and more the size your swatch sends you to: it is the needle you buy when a worsted pattern on a US 8 comes out loose, or when a DK pattern on a US 6 comes out tight. Buy a 24in bamboo fixed circular as a default, or the steel ChiaoGoo if you work colorwork and cables. For straights, buy 13in or 14in rather than 9in, because 9in holds about 45 stitches at this gauge and a scarf is more than that.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 7 (4.5mm), 24in
Clover · Best for one needle, most worsted and aran projects
Bamboo at 4.5mm on the default 24in cord - the half-size step up from a US 6 when your gauge comes out tight.
- Size
- US 7 (4.50mm)

- 24in
- Material
- Bamboo
- Format
- Fixed circular
- Lengths offered
- 16in, 24in, 36in and 48in at this size
- Article
- 3016/24-7
Who it suits
Anyone who swatched a worsted pattern on a US 8 and came out loose, and anyone knitting aran-weight yarn to a tight fabric.
Why it is here
US 7 (4.50mm) bamboo, 24in, article 3016/24-7, from the Takumi line Clover sells in 16in, 24in, 36in and 48in at this size. Twenty-four inches is the length that covers the most ground: sweater bodies flat or in the round, scarves, shawls and sleeves by magic loop. Bamboo gives a little grip, which suits the slippery superwash merino that most worsted patterns are written for.
What you give up
Bamboo is slower than steel, which matters if you knit at speed. One fixed length means a blanket needs a second needle.

ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needle, US 7 (4.5mm), 24in
ChiaoGoo · Best for colorwork, cables and tight decreases
Machine-precisioned stainless tips at 4.5mm on a memory-free cable - the needle for worsted colorwork and tidy decreases.
- Size
- US 7 (4.5mm)
- Length
- 24in (61cm)
- Tip material
- Surgical stainless steel, machine-precisioned lace tips
- Cable
- Memory-free multi-strand steel, nylon coated, red
- Model
- 7024-7
Who it suits
Anyone knitting stranded colorwork, cables or anything with frequent k2tog and ssk.
Why it is here
US 7 (4.5mm) surgical stainless tips, 24in (61cm), model 7024-7, on ChiaoGoo's memory-free multi-strand steel cable with a nylon coat. The tips are the reason: a sharp point goes into a tight stitch cleanly, which is what colorwork and decreases demand, and the satin-sheen steel moves stitches fast. The memory-free cable also does not coil, which matters when you put a project down for a month.
What you give up
Slick steel plus sharp points means split stitches if your tension is loose, and the price is roughly double the bamboo. Not the needle to learn on.

Susan Bates Silvalume Single Point Needles, US 7 (4.5mm), 14in
Susan Bates · Best for flat knitting on a budget
The inexpensive aluminum straight at 4.5mm in the long version, which is the one worth owning.
- Size
- US 7 (4.5mm)
- Length
- 14in
- Material
- Anodized aluminum
- Format
- Single point - flat knitting only
- Also offered
- 10in at this size
Who it suits
Anyone knitting flat who does not want to spend much, and anyone who learned on straights.
Why it is here
A pair of 14in anodized aluminum single points at US 7 (4.5mm). At 4.5mm you get roughly five stitches to the inch, so a 14in needle holds about 70 stitches - which covers a scarf, a dishcloth, a hat knitted flat and the back of a child's sweater. Susan Bates also sells a 10in pair at this size; the longer one is the one worth owning.
What you give up
Aluminum is slick, so stitches move easily in both directions. Straights only knit flat, and the weight of a growing project hangs off your wrists.

ChiaoGoo 6in Stainless Double Point Needles, US 7 (4.5mm)
ChiaoGoo · Best for hat crowns, mitten tops, thumbs
Six-inch steel double points at 4.5mm, for hat crowns and mitten tops in worsted.
- Size
- US 7 (4.5mm)
- Length
- 6in (15cm)
- Material
- Surgical stainless steel, satin-sheen finish
- Format
- Double pointed, worked in the round
Who it suits
Anyone knitting hats, mittens or socks in worsted who has decreased past what a circular can hold.
Why it is here
Six-inch (15cm) surgical stainless double points at US 7 (4.5mm) with the satin-sheen finish. Six inches is the right DPN length for hat crowns and mitten tops: long enough to hold the stitches, short enough not to poke you. Steel at this gauge is the right call in a way it is not at 9mm - the stitches are small enough to stay put, and the speed is welcome on fiddly decrease rounds.
What you give up
Double points take practice, and slick steel makes the learning curve steeper. Magic loop on the 24in circular does the same job with one needle.

ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Interchangeable Set (Complete, 5in tips)
ChiaoGoo · Best for anyone who will swatch properly
Thirteen pairs of surgical stainless lace tips on memory-free red nylon-coated steel cables, with a lifeline hole through every tip.
- Tips
- 13 pairs, 5in (13cm), US 2-15 (2.75-10mm)
- Tip material
- Surgical-grade stainless steel, lace point
- Cables
- Multi-strand steel core, red nylon coating; 2 x 14in, 2 x 22in, 2 x 30in
- Notable
- Lifeline hole in each tip; memory-free cable
- Also included
- Stitch markers, two keys, needle gauge, stoppers, connector, case
Who it suits
Anyone buying more than one needle this year, and anyone who takes gauge seriously.
Why it is here
Tips from US 2 to 15 (2.75-10mm) with 5in tips and the Red Lace cable system. This is the strongest argument for a set that the whole size series produces: US 7 is a gauge-correction size, which means you want US 6, 7 and 8 available in the same evening. Buying those as three fixed circulars costs more than a set and leaves you with three cables you did not choose.
What you give up
A large upfront price, and steel tips throughout. The 5in tips are also short for very large hands.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 7 (4.5mm), 9in
Clover · Best for swatches and sleeves, and not much else
Nine-inch bamboo straights at 4.5mm - fine for a sleeve or a swatch, short for a scarf.
- Size
- US 7 (4.50mm)
- Length
- 9in
- Material
- Bamboo
- Format
- Single point - flat knitting only
- Also offered
- 13in at this size
- Article
- 3011-07
Who it suits
Nobody knitting a scarf or a sweater panel, which is what most people buy a US 7 straight for.
Why it is here
A pair of 9in bamboo single points at US 7 (4.50mm), article 3011-07. The material is right and the price is low, and nine inches is the problem: at roughly five stitches to the inch it holds about 45 stitches before they crowd the tip, and a plain worsted scarf is 40 or more before you count working room. Clover also sells a 13in Takumi straight at this size - buy that one, or the 14in aluminum pair above.
What you give up
Genuinely useful for swatching, sleeve cuffs and small flat pieces. Just not the pair to buy if you only buy one.

Where 4.5mm sits
US 7 is the overlap size. The Craft Yarn Council puts DK (category 3) at 3.75 to 4.5mm and worsted (category 4) at 4.5 to 5.5mm, so 4.5mm is the exact boundary - claimed by both bands, named by neither as its center.
| US size | Metric | Weight band it sits in |
|---|---|---|
| US 5 | 3.75mm | DK - bottom |
| US 6 | 4.0mm | DK - middle, the size most DK patterns name |
| US 7 | 4.5mm | Top of DK, bottom of worsted |
| US 8 | 5.0mm | Worsted - the size most worsted patterns name |
| US 9 | 5.5mm | Top of worsted, bottom of bulky |
Those half-millimeter steps are small enough that buying the wrong one is easy and large enough that the fabric changes. Best US size 6 knitting needles and best US size 8 knitting needles are the pages either side.
It is the gauge-correction size
This is the real reason to own a US 7, and it is why the size gets bought more often than it gets named.
- Your worsted swatch came out loose. The pattern says US 8 and you are getting fewer stitches to four inches than it calls for. Going down to US 7 is the first correction.
- Your DK swatch came out tight. The pattern says US 6 and you are getting more stitches than it wants. Going up to US 7 is the first correction.
- Your yarn is aran rather than worsted. Aran is slightly heavier than American worsted, and on a US 8 it can read as dense - yarn weight names around the world has the conversion.
- You want a firmer fabric on purpose. Bags, baskets and anything structural benefit from going down a size from the band's recommendation.
Knitting gauge and swatching has the full method, including why washing the swatch is not optional.
What people knit at 4.5mm
- Worsted sweaters at a firmer gauge than the band suggests, which is the commonest reason this size is bought.
- Aran-weight anything, where US 8 often reads loose and sloppy.
- DK garments at a drapier gauge, especially summer tops and lightweight cardigans.
- Hats and mittens in worsted, where a tighter fabric is warmer and keeps its shape through a winter.
- Stranded colorwork in worsted, where going down a size tightens the floats and evens out the pattern.
For what to put on it, best worsted weight yarn and best DK weight yarn cover both sides of the boundary this needle straddles.
Every set includes this one
| Set | Tip range | US 7 included? |
|---|---|---|
| ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete | US 2-15 (2.75-10mm) | Yes |
| addi Click Turbo | US 4-15 (3.5-10mm) | Yes |
| Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe | US 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm) | Yes |
Unlike US 13 and US 17, where sets run out, 4.5mm sits comfortably inside all three. Check your case before buying a single needle - and if you do not own a set, this is the size that makes the argument for one, because gauge correction means wanting US 6, 7 and 8 within the same project.
Cable and needle length at five stitches to the inch
- 16in circular - hats and yokes. Too short for flat knitting.
- 24in circular - the default. Sweater bodies, scarves, magic loop for sleeves.
- 32in to 40in circular - blankets and wide shawls.
- 9in straights - swatches, sleeve cuffs, small pieces. About 45 stitches before crowding.
- 13in to 14in straights - scarves, sweater panels, anything 50 stitches and up.
Buying without getting the wrong needle
- Buy on the millimeter figure. US 7 is 4.5mm. The sizes either side are 4.0mm and 5.0mm, and listings at adjacent sizes are mixed up constantly.
- Watch for US 7 against 7in. Needles in this category are described by both size and length, and a listing can carry both numbers - read which is which.
- Metric-only listings are normal from European brands. A needle sold as 4.5mm with no US number is a US 7.
- UK sizing runs backwards. An old British pattern calling for a size 7 means 4.5mm by coincidence of the modern US scale, not by equivalence - check the millimeter figure in any vintage pattern.
- If you own a set, you already have it. All three sets above include 4.5mm.
Questions people actually ask
What size is a US 7 knitting needle in mm?
US 7 is 4.5mm. The sizes either side are US 6 at 4.0mm and US 8 at 5.0mm, so the steps here are half a millimeter - small enough that buying the wrong one is easy, and large enough to change the fabric.
What is 4.5 mm in US knitting needle sizes?
4.5mm is a US 7. European and British brands often sell needles by the metric figure only, so a needle labeled 4.5mm with no US number is the one you want if your pattern calls for a 7.
What yarn do you use with size 7 needles?
Worsted or DK. The Craft Yarn Council puts DK at 3.75 to 4.5mm and worsted at 4.5 to 5.5mm, so 4.5mm is the exact boundary between them. With worsted it gives a firmer, denser fabric than a US 8; with DK it gives a looser, drapier one than a US 6.
Should I use US 7 or US 8 for worsted yarn?
Start with US 8, which is what most worsted patterns assume, then swatch. If you get fewer stitches to four inches than the pattern calls for, your fabric is too loose and US 7 is the step down. Wash and dry the swatch before measuring - some yarns relax noticeably.
Do interchangeable needle sets include US 7?
All three we list do - the ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete (US 2-15), the addi Click Turbo (US 4-15) and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe (US 4-11). This is the size that makes the best case for owning a set, because gauge correction means wanting US 6, 7 and 8 in the same evening.
Are 9 inch straight needles long enough at US 7?
Only for small pieces. At 4.5mm you get roughly five stitches to the inch, so a 9in needle holds about 45 stitches before they crowd the tip, and a plain worsted scarf is usually 40 or more plus working room. Buy a 13in or 14in pair for scarves and sweater panels.
Are bamboo or metal needles better at 4.5mm?
Either, and it is genuinely a preference at this size. Bamboo grips slightly, which suits slippery superwash merino and loose tension. Steel is faster and its sharper tips suit colorwork, cables and tight decreases. Unlike the jumbo sizes, needle weight is not a factor at 4.5mm.
