Best US Size 8 Knitting Needles
Five millimeters, and the single most useful needle to own. Most worsted patterns are written around it.

The short answer
US 8 is a 5.0mm needle and it is the one most worsted patterns assume. If you own no needles, this is the size to own first. Buy straights only if the project is flat; otherwise buy a 16in or 24in fixed circular, which handles hats, cowls and flat knitting equally well. Pair it with worsted weight, not super bulky.

Anodized aluminum, heat treated and polished, in 10in and 14in lengths across a range from US 0 (2mm) to US 15 (10mm), sold as a pair with a no-roll knob carrying the size in US and metric. Printed sizing does not wear off the way painted sizing does.
What you give up
Straights only knit flat. Almost everything worth making in worsted beyond a scarf is worked in the round or is too heavy to hang off two levers, so this is a starting point rather than a destination.

Why it is here
100% polyester chenille, category 6 super bulky, 108yd per 150g ball. It is thick, soft and the commonest yarn in a beginner's first bag.
What you give up

Why 5mm is the default
Category 4 medium - worsted, afghan, aran - is worked on 4.5mm to 5.5mm needles in the standard weight system. US 8 sits in the middle, and worsted is the most widely sold yarn weight there is. The two facts together are why this needle turns up in every pattern and every starter kit.

Those are the manufacturers' own figures, and the spread tells you something useful: the same needle gives between 17 and 19 stitches over 4in depending on the yarn. Your hands move it further. Swatch - knitting gauge and swatching has the method.
Straights or circulars
- Straights are how most people learn and they are genuinely fine for a scarf.
- Circulars knit flat too. You simply turn the work at the end of a row, exactly as with straights.
- Circulars carry the weight in your lap, which is the single biggest comfort difference at worsted weight.
- Straights cannot work in the round, and hats, cowls and sleeves are most of what worsted is used for.

What 5mm makes
- Worsted sweaters and cardigans - see best needles for a sweater.
- Hats, on a 16in circular or double points.
- Blankets in worsted, on a 29in or 36in cable.
- Scarves and cowls, where it is the safest default of any size.
- Swatches, because so many patterns quote gauge on it.
The yarn side
A needle size is one half of a pairing and the yarn is the other. At 5mm the right partner is a worsted; a super bulky produces a board and a fingering produces a net.

What size is a US 8 knitting needle in mm?
5.0mm. It sits between US 7 (4.5mm) and US 9 (5.5mm), and it is the middle of the published range for worsted weight yarn.
What yarn works with US 8 needles?
Worsted weight. The standard weight system puts category 4 medium on 4.5mm to 5.5mm needles. Published gauges on a 5mm needle run from about 17 to 19 stitches over 4in depending on the yarn.
Should my first knitting needles be US 8?
It is the most useful single size to own, because worsted is the most widely sold yarn weight. Buy it as a 24in fixed circular rather than straights - a circular knits flat as well, and holds far more.
Can I use straight needles at US 8?
Yes, for flat knitting like a scarf. Straights cannot work in the round, and at worsted weight the finished fabric gets heavy enough that circulars are noticeably kinder on wrists and shoulders.
Can I knit super bulky yarn on a US 8?
Not well. Super bulky wants roughly 8mm to 12.75mm; on 5mm it makes a stiff board, the effort per stitch is high, and a chenille pile abrades against the needle.
