Why a circular, not straights
Straight needles are what everyone pictures, and a circular does everything they do plus several things they cannot. There is no beginner-specific reason to start with straights.
- A circular knits flat. Work back and forth exactly as you would on straights. Nothing about the technique changes.
- It also knits in the round, so a hat does not require a second purchase.
- The weight sits in your lap. On straights the whole project hangs off the needle ends and loads your wrists.
- It holds more stitches. A blanket or a sweater body will not fit on a straight needle at all.
- You cannot drop one on the train. The two tips are attached to each other.

Why bamboo to start
Bamboo has surface grip. Metal does not. While your tension is uneven - which it will be for the first several projects - stitches slide off metal tips and disappear, and picking up a dropped stitch is a demoralizing thing to have to learn in your first hour.

The right first size
5mm, which is US 8. That is the size most worsted yarn labels suggest, and worsted is what beginner patterns and tutorials use. The stitches are big enough to see and small enough to work quickly.
Pair it with a smooth, pale, solid-color worsted yarn - the reasoning is in best yarn for beginners. Being able to see your own stitches is the thing that decides whether the first hour is enjoyable.
What goes wrong in the first hour
- Tension too tight. Almost universal. The stitches grip the needle and the next one is hard to work. Go up a needle size rather than trying to relax; your tension will loosen on its own.
- Dropped stitches. A stitch slides off and the fabric starts to unravel downward. Bamboo reduces it; a stitch marker and a slow first row help more.
- Accidental increases. Rows getting wider because the yarn is being wrapped over the needle at the row start. Count every row until it stops happening.
- Curling edges. Stockinette curls. Always. That is the fabric, not your knitting - use garter stitch or add a border.
When to buy a set
After two or three finished projects, when you have stopped dropping stitches and are tired of buying a needle for every pattern. At that point an interchangeable set is a genuinely good purchase and will last years.
