Best Knitting Needles for Beginners Using Chunky Yarn

The standard beginner advice says buy a 5mm. If your yarn is chunky, that advice is for somebody else.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 11 (8mm), 24in

The short answer

Read your ball band, then buy one bamboo circular needle in the size it names. For chenille blanket yarn like Bernat Blanket that is US 11 (8mm); for Wool-Ease Thick & Quick it is US 13 (9mm); for the thickest weight 6 yarns it is US 15 (10mm). Buy a 24in cord, buy bamboo rather than metal, and buy one needle rather than a set. The standard beginner advice - one 5mm circular - is correct for worsted yarn and wrong for yours: 5mm with chunky yarn produces a dense, stiff fabric that is hard work and unpleasant to wear. You do not need double points, straights, or anything else yet.

Who it suits

Anyone whose first yarn is a soft chenille blanket yarn, which is what most chunky starter projects and gift kits contain.

Why it is here

US 11 (8mm) bamboo on a flexible soft cord, 24in. Bernat Blanket publishes its gauge as 8 sts x 13 rows on 8mm (US 11), so this needle matches the most widely sold chunky yarn exactly. Bamboo matters more here than at any finer size: chunky stitches are large and heavy, and a beginner's grip is not yet consistent, so a needle that grips back is the difference between a relaxed evening and picking stitches up off the floor.

What you give up

One size and one length per pack, so if you later move to a different chunky yarn you may need another needle. Twenty-four inches is also longer than a scarf strictly needs, though that extra cable costs you nothing.

Who it suits

Anyone holding a skein of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick or a yarn whose label names US 13.

Why it is here

US 13 (9mm) bamboo, 24in, article 3016/24-13. Lion Brand publishes Wool-Ease Thick & Quick's gauge as 9 sts x 12 rows on US 13 (9mm), so if that is the yarn in your hand this is the needle the manufacturer intends. The two chunky yarns beginners most often receive name two different needle sizes, and that is the single most common reason a first chunky project comes out wrong.

What you give up

Identical to the US 11 otherwise - one size, one length. If you have both kinds of chunky yarn in the house you will want both needles, which is the argument for eventually buying a set.

Who it suits

Anyone whose yarn is labeled weight 6 super bulky and recommends 10mm, and anyone who found US 11 produced a stiff, dense fabric.

Why it is here

US 15 (10mm) bamboo, 29in. Ten millimeters sits mid-band in the standard's super bulky range of 8 to 12.75mm, and the longer 29in cord matters at this gauge because fat stitches fill a cable faster than people expect. It is also the size to go up to if your US 11 swatch came out tight and boardy.

What you give up

Too big for most chenille blanket yarn, which will look gappy and loose at 10mm. Twenty-nine inches is also unwieldy for a narrow scarf.

Who it suits

Anyone who has tried a circular and hated it, and anyone being taught by someone who only uses straights.

Why it is here

A pair of 14in bamboo single points at US 13 (9mm), tapered, flat knitting only. If you are going to use straights at this gauge, length is the thing that matters: chunky stitches are wide, so a scarf fills a short needle quickly and then the stitches crowd the tip and slide off. Fourteen inches gives you the room.

What you give up

Straights only knit flat, so a hat or a cowl in the round is out. The weight of a growing chunky project also hangs off your wrists rather than sitting in your lap, which a circular avoids.

Who it suits

Anyone who has finished a scarf and wants to make a hat next.

Why it is here

Five 6in stainless steel double points at US 11 (8mm), precisely machined, tapered points, size laser etched on every needle. A hat worked in the round gets too small for a circular at the crown, and double points are the standard answer. Listed here so you know what the next purchase is - not because you need it today.

What you give up

Steel is slick, which is the opposite of what a beginner wants: large chunky stitches slide off idle needles easily. Double points are also genuinely fiddly to learn, which is why this is a second-project tool.

Format
Single point - flat knitting only

Who it suits

Nobody starting with chunky yarn, which is why it is on the page.

Why it is here

A pair of 9in bamboo single points at US 10 (6mm). Two problems at once. Six millimeters is below the bulky range that most chunky yarn labels name, so the fabric comes out dense and board-like. And nine inches is short: at this gauge you get roughly three stitches to the inch, so the needle holds about 27 stitches before they crowd the tip, and a chunky scarf is usually 20 to 30 stitches plus the room to work them. It is the cheapest needle on the shelf and it is the most common first mistake.

What you give up

You spend a few dollars more on the right size. If 6mm genuinely is what your ball band says, your yarn is bulky rather than super bulky and [best US size 10 knitting needles](/knitting-needles/best-us-size-10-knitting-needles) is the page - but buy a longer needle or a circular.

Why the usual beginner advice does not fit you

Almost every 'first needle' guide, including ours, says to buy one 5mm circular and a skein of smooth worsted yarn. That is good advice and it assumes a yarn you do not have.

Chunky yarn is two to four times thicker than worsted. Forcing it onto a 5mm needle makes a fabric with no space between stitches: stiff, heavy, slow to knit and uncomfortable to wear. It is also harder to learn on, because you cannot see the stitch structure or get the needle tip in cleanly. If someone gave you a chunky-yarn kit or you picked a chunky yarn because it looked fast, the needle advice has to change with it.

Match the needle to your ball band

This is the part that actually determines whether your first project works. The two chunky yarns beginners most often end up with name two different needle sizes, and a kit's instructions do not always match the yarn inside it.

Published gauge and recommended needle on the chunky yarns this site lists. Figures are from each manufacturer.

  • If the band says 8mm or US 11, buy the US 11. This covers most chenille blanket yarn.
  • If it says US 13 or 9mm, buy the US 13. This covers Wool-Ease Thick & Quick and similar wool blends.
  • If it says 10mm or US 15, buy the US 15.
  • If it says US 17 or 12.75mm, your yarn is jumbo rather than chunky - that is a different and much thicker category, and best yarn for arm knitting covers what people actually do with it.
  • If there is no band, measure the yarn against the yarn weight chart or use wraps per inch.

Bamboo, not metal - and it matters more here

For a beginner on worsted yarn, bamboo versus metal is a mild preference. On chunky yarn it is close to a real recommendation, for two reasons that compound.

  1. Chunky stitches are heavy. A loop of super bulky yarn has real mass, and gravity pulls it off a slick needle whenever you pause. Bamboo has enough surface friction to hold them.
  2. Your tension is not consistent yet. Beginners work loosely and unevenly, which makes stitches looser on the needle than they will be in six months. Grip compensates.
  3. Big needles are also lighter in bamboo, and at 8 to 10mm the weight of the needle itself starts to matter over a long session.
  4. The downside is blunter tips, which fight you slightly on a decrease. At this gauge, with this few stitches, that is a small price.
  5. [Bamboo vs metal knitting needles](/knitting-needles/bamboo-vs-metal-knitting-needles) works the comparison through at every size if you want the full picture.

One needle, not a set

The interchangeable sets on this site are good products and none of them is your first purchase. A complete set costs many times what one needle does, most of its sizes are for yarn you are not using, and learning on borrowed-feeling equipment you half understand is not an advantage.

Buy the one size your yarn names. If you are still knitting in three months and have bought a second and third chunky yarn in different sizes, that is the moment a set starts to make sense - and knitting needle sets vs single needles is the page for that decision. Two of the three sets we list reach US 15 and all three reach US 11.

Cable length, briefly

What to buy for a first chunky project.
ProjectCableWhy
Scarf24inKnits flat perfectly well on a circular
Cowl or snood24inBig enough round to join without strain
Hat16in, plus DPNs for the crownA second project, not a first
Chunky blanket32in or 40inFat stitches fill a short cable fast
Not sure yet24inThe one that covers the most ground

A circular needle knits flat exactly as straights do - you simply turn the work at the end of each row - so a 24in circular covers a scarf, a cowl and most of a hat with one purchase. Circular needle cable lengths has the full mapping.

What else you actually need

  • Nothing, for a garter-stitch scarf. Needle plus yarn plus a pair of scissors.
  • A blunt darning needle for weaving the ends in when you finish. How to weave in ends covers the technique.
  • A stitch marker is useful but optional at this stage, and a scrap of contrast yarn does the job.
  • Skip the gauge swatch for your first scarf. It matters for garments and it does not matter for a rectangle - just start.
  • Buy enough yarn at once. Chunky yarn has short yardage per ball, so a scarf is commonly two or three balls. How much yarn do I need has the arithmetic.

If your fabric comes out wrong

  1. Stiff and board-like? Your needle is too small for the yarn. Go up a size - that is the most common first-project problem and it is exactly what this page is trying to prevent.
  2. Loose, gappy and floppy? Your needle is too big, or your tension is very loose. Go down one size.
  3. Stitches keep sliding off? Slick needle, loose tension, or both. Bamboo fixes most of it.
  4. Edges curling? That is stockinette doing what stockinette does. Use garter stitch for a first scarf and the problem disappears.
  5. It is getting wider as you go? You are accidentally adding stitches at the edges. Count every few rows - how to count rows and stitches covers it.

For what to put on the needle once you have it, best chunky yarn covers the yarn side, and best needles for chunky yarn goes deeper on sizing and needle weight once you are past the first project.

Questions people actually ask

What size knitting needles do beginners need for chunky yarn?

Whatever the ball band says, which for chunky yarn is usually 8mm (US 11), 9mm (US 13) or 10mm (US 15). Bernat Blanket names 8mm and Wool-Ease Thick & Quick names US 13, so the two most common chunky yarns ask for different needles - check yours rather than assuming.

Can beginners use 5mm needles with chunky yarn?

You can, and you should not. Five millimeters is the standard beginner recommendation for worsted yarn. With chunky yarn it makes a dense, stiff fabric that is slow to knit, hard to see the stitches in, and uncomfortable to wear.

Should a beginner use bamboo or metal needles for chunky yarn?

Bamboo. Chunky stitches are heavy and slide off slick metal whenever you put the work down, and a beginner's tension is looser and less even, which makes it worse. Bamboo grips enough to hold them, and it is lighter at these sizes.

Is chunky yarn easier for beginners?

Yes, mostly. The stitches are big enough to see clearly, projects finish in hours rather than weeks, and mistakes are easy to spot. The one catch is that the needle advice changes - the usual 5mm recommendation is for worsted and will not serve you.

Do beginners need circular needles or straights for chunky yarn?

A circular is the better single purchase. It knits flat exactly as straights do, it also knits in the round for a hat or a cowl, and it puts the weight of a growing chunky project in your lap rather than on your wrists. If you want straights anyway, get 14in ones - 9in needles are too short at this gauge.

Should I buy a needle set to start?

No. Buy the one size your yarn names. A set costs many times as much, most of its sizes are for yarn you are not using, and you can add one later if you are still knitting in a few months and have bought chunky yarns in different sizes.

How many stitches for a chunky scarf?

At chunky gauge you get roughly three stitches to the inch, so a 7 to 8 inch scarf is about 20 to 25 stitches. That is also why a 9in straight needle is too short - it holds around 27 stitches before they crowd the tip, leaving no room to work them.
