Needle Sets vs Single Needles
A set covers ten sizes. Most people use four. The arithmetic is not as obvious as the packaging suggests.

The short answer
Buy singles until you know which sizes you reach for, then buy a set once the answer is more than about four. Most knitters use 4mm, 4.5mm, 5mm and 5.5mm for the majority of patterns - and every interchangeable set leaves out the 16in length and everything below US 2.

Which sizes people actually use
This is the fact the decision turns on, and the packaging never mentions it.

Four sizes - 4.0, 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5mm - cover the great majority of patterns written for the yarns most people buy. Those bands come from the Craft Yarn Council standard.
The two gaps every set has
The second gap is at the small end. Most interchangeable sets start at US 4 (3.5mm) because a smaller tip has no room for a join, and the ChiaoGoo complete set starting at US 2 is unusual for that reason. Below US 2 the format does not exist at all, so sock knitters buy fixed circulars or double points regardless.
The underrated argument for a set
It is not the sizes. It is the cables.
A set arrives with three or four cable lengths that any tip can use. Buying that as fixed circulars means one needle per size-and-length combination, and the combinations multiply fast: three sizes in three lengths is nine purchases. The underrated argument against
Two projects at once. With fixed circulars you simply use two needles. With an interchangeable set you have to take the tips off the first project, which means owning spare cables and end stoppers - and if you do not, one project gets frogged or stalls.

The sequence we would follow
- One 5mm fixed circular, 32in, in bamboo. It does flat and round work and will not become obsolete.
- A 16in in the same size the first time you knit a hat.
- A second size the first time a pattern demands one.
- A set, once you own four or five and are still buying.
- Then spare cables and stoppers, which is what makes the set actually work.

When a set is clearly right straight away
- You knit garments. Gauge adjustment means owning the size above and below whatever the pattern says.
- You already know your material. If you have decided on wood or on steel, a set stops being a gamble.
- You are replacing an accumulated jumble. One consistent join and one case is worth real money in frustration.

Questions people actually ask
Should I buy a knitting needle set or single needles?
Singles until you know which sizes you use, then a set once that is more than about four. Most knitters use 4.0mm to 5.5mm for the majority of patterns, so a ten-size set is often more range than the knitting needs.
Can you make a 16 inch circular with an interchangeable set?
Usually not. The tips are 4.5in to 5in each, so the pair alone is close to 10in and the shortest cable overshoots. Hats generally need a fixed 16in circular whatever set you own.
What sizes are missing from interchangeable needle sets?
Anything below US 2 or 4, depending on the set, because a small tip has no room for a join - and the 16in length, which the format cannot produce. Sock knitters need fixed circulars or double points regardless.
Can you knit two projects at once with one interchangeable set?
Only if you own spare cables and end stoppers. Otherwise the tips are committed to whichever project has them, which is the commonest frustration among new set owners.
Is an interchangeable needle set worth it?
Once you knit garments, or once you own four or five fixed circulars and are still buying. The real saving is on cable lengths rather than on tips - three sizes in three lengths is nine fixed needles and one set.
