Circular Needle Cable Lengths Explained
The number after the needle size decides whether the project is possible at all.

The short answer
Buy a needle at least 2in shorter than the circumference you are knitting in the round, and for flat knitting buy one long enough to hold the whole row loosely. If you own a single circular, make it 32in - it knits any small circumference by magic loop and holds a blanket-width row flat.
What the number actually measures
A circular needle is quoted by its total length: both tips plus the cable between them. A 32in circular is not a 32in cable - it is roughly 22in of cable and two 5in tips.
This matters when you buy interchangeable cables, which are sold by the finished length they make with standard tips. If your set has longer tips, the same cable makes a longer needle. ChiaoGoo, addi and Knitter's Pride all label cables by the finished circular length.
The rule for knitting in the round
If the needle is longer than the piece, the stitches cannot span it. You end up stretching the fabric between the tips, the stitches at the ends distort, and past a certain point you simply cannot join the round at all.
There is no equivalent problem in the other direction, which is why the safe error is to buy short. A too-short circular is crowded but workable; a too-long one is impossible.

An adult hat is around 20 to 22in around, which is why 16in is the standard hat needle. An adult sweater body is 36 to 48in, which is why 32in and 40in are the sweater lengths.
Flat knitting has the opposite constraint
When you knit flat on a circular you are not going around anything. You turn at the end of every row exactly as you would on a straight needle, and the cable simply holds the stitches.
So there is no minimum, only a maximum: the cable must be long enough that the whole row sits on it without being compressed. A blanket row of 250 stitches in worsted needs 32in at least, and is more comfortable on 40in.
This is the argument in best straight knitting needles - a long circular does everything a straight does and removes the width limit.
Magic loop changes the answer entirely
Magic loop knits any circumference, however small, on one long circular. You pull a loop of cable out between two groups of stitches and work them alternately.
It needs a 32in cable as a minimum and works better on 40in, and it needs a genuinely flexible cable with a smooth join - a stiff cable will not take the fold. Best needles for magic loop covers those requirements, which are stricter than the length rule above.
If you knit magic loop, one 40in circular replaces every short length in that size. That is the single biggest saving available in needle buying, and it is why a set with several cables is better value than it first appears.
Cable memory, and how to fix it
A cable with memory holds the coil it was packaged in and springs back to it. On a fresh circular this shows up as the work twisting into a spiral, and it never fully goes away on a cheap cord.
- Check the material. ChiaoGoo specifies multi-strand steel with a red nylon coating as memory-free. Knitter's Pride uses nylon-coated stainless steel with swivel connectors. Both resist coiling by construction.
- Warm it. Dip the cable in hot - not boiling - water for a few seconds and hang it straight. This relaxes most nylon cords temporarily.
- Give it time under load. A cable carrying the weight of a growing project straightens on its own within a few hours of knitting.
How many lengths to own
Fewer than the wall of packets suggests. In practice most knitters need three, and one of those covers a lot of ground.
- 32in first. Flat knitting, sweater bodies, shawls, and every small circumference by magic loop.
- 16in second, if you knit hats. It is the one length magic loop does not replace comfortably for a beginner.
- 40in or 47in third, if you knit blankets or plus-size garments.
Buying an interchangeable set gets several cables in one purchase, which is why it beats buying fixed circulars once you own more than about six of them.

Can a circular needle be too long for a project?
