The short answer
Magic loop needs a long circular - 32in minimum, 40in is more comfortable - with a genuinely flexible, memory-free cable and a smooth join. The cable is doing the work: it is pulled into a tight bend twice per round, and a stiff one fights you the whole time.

Who it suits
Not for magic-loop sock knitters. For sleeves and hat crowns in worsted it is perfectly good.

What magic loop is
It is a way to knit a small circumference on one long circular needle. The stitches are split in half, the cable is pulled out into a loop at each side, and you work half the stitches at a time using both tips.
The advantage over double-pointed needles is that there is nothing to drop, nothing to lose, and no ladders between needles. The advantage over a short circular is that it works at any circumference, right down to a sock toe.
The cable is the whole technique
Three cable properties decide whether magic loop is pleasant or exhausting:
- Flexibility. The cable is pulled into a tight bend on every round. A stiff cable resists, and that resistance is felt in your hands hundreds of times per project.
- Memory. A cable that holds its packaging coil will keep trying to return to that coil while you are trying to bend it somewhere else. Memory-free is the specification to look for, and ChiaoGoo states it explicitly.
- Join smoothness. Stitches are pushed across the join constantly in magic loop - far more than in ordinary circular knitting. A rough join catches every single time.
Tips matter far less here than they do elsewhere. If you are choosing a needle specifically for magic loop, judge the cable.

If you are buying one needle for magic loop, buy 32in. If you already own 32in and find it tight, 40in is a genuine improvement rather than a marginal one.
The problems, and their fixes
- Laddering at the gap where you switch sides. Pull the first two stitches after each turn firmly. It disappears with practice.
- The cable will not bend. Run it through warm water to relax it temporarily. If it is that stiff, the needle is the problem.
- Stitches catch at the join. A rough or stepped join. There is no fix for this except a better needle.
- The join loosens. Constant cable pulling loosens screw joins faster than ordinary knitting does. Retighten with the key regularly, or use a click join.
- Losing track of which side you are on. Put a marker at the start of the round. Everyone needs this at first.
Magic loop, two circulars, or DPNs?
All three do the same job and it is a genuine preference. Magic loop needs one needle and nothing can be lost. Two circulars involve less cable pulling. DPNs are fast once learned and produce ladders until they are not.
