US 3 is 3.25mm, and it is the size most American sock patterns name. Buy double points if you want the traditional route, or a 29in or longer fixed circular if you would rather magic loop. US 3 is 3.25mm - and 3mm is not US 3
This is the single most confused part of American needle sizing, and it is worth settling before anything else. The US numbers are a naming convention with no arithmetic behind them, so the only reliable figure is the millimeter one.

- 3.0mm is US 2.5, not US 3. A pattern written in millimeters that says 3mm wants the smaller needle.
- 3.25mm is US 3. A pattern written in US sizes that says 3 wants this one.
- A quarter of a millimeter sounds trivial and is not. At sock gauge it is roughly a stitch over four inches, which over a 64-stitch sock is most of a shoe size.
- Some brands label 3.0mm as US 3. This is why buying on the metric figure rather than the letter or number is the only safe habit.

Why this size, and not another
US 3 is not arbitrary. It is where the standard sock yarn and the standard sock fabric meet.
Fingering weight yarn is published for a much finer needle than socks use. Patons Kroy Socks states 32 stitches and 40 rows over 4in on a 2.75mm needle - and almost nobody knits socks at the ball band's gauge, because a sock has to be denser than a sweater. The fabric needs to resist a heel rubbing inside a shoe, and loose stitches wear through.
So sock knitters go the other way from the usual advice: they work at or below the published gauge rather than above it. US 3 at 3.25mm produces a fabric that is dense enough to last without being so tight that it hurts your hands. It is a compromise the craft settled on rather than a rule anyone wrote down.
The gap that catches people, again
This site has made the point before at 2mm, on best US size 0 knitting needles, and it applies again a size and a half up. Interchangeable sets are sold as though they cover everything. They do not cover the bottom.

Two of the three stop above this size. That is not a defect - a screw or click join becomes genuinely unreliable as the tip gets thinner, and the manufacturers have drawn a line where they think it stops being safe. But it does mean that buying a premium set and expecting to knit socks on it is a mistake that costs real money.
- Buying a set and knitting socks? Check the smallest tip before you pay, not after.
- Already own a set that stops at 3.5mm? Buy fixed circulars or double points for the sock sizes. That is the normal solution and it is not an admission of defeat.
- Budget for it separately. Sock needles are a second purchase for most set owners, and knitting needle sets vs single needles works through the arithmetic.
Double points, magic loop or two circulars
A sock is a tube of about 8 inches around, which is far too small for an ordinary circular needle. There are three established ways around that and no consensus on which is best.

- Double points are the fastest to pick up and the most fiddly to carry. Five needles in a bag is five chances to lose one.
- Magic loop uses one needle and cannot be dropped, but it puts a hard bend in the cable and needs a genuinely flexible one.
- Two circulars is the least common of the three and the most convenient for two-at-a-time socks - see best needles for two-at-a-time socks.
- Ladders happen with all three at the point where the needles change. Working the first two stitches of each needle firmly is the fix, not a different method.
- Try double points first if you have never done either. They are cheap, and knowing how the stitches sit makes magic loop easier to learn afterwards.
Steel or bamboo at this size
At 3.25mm the material question is still live, unlike at 2mm where wood starts to snap.
- Steel is faster and stronger. It will not break, the tips stay sharp, and the stitches move. The cost is that they also move when you do not want them to.
- Bamboo grips. Stitches stay where you put them, which is worth a lot on double points, and it is warmer in the hand.
- Bamboo at 3.25mm can still snap under a tight sock gauge, particularly at the join of a fixed circular.
- Sharpness matters for sock heels, where you are picking up stitches along an edge. Blunt tips make that job slower.

What else is knitted at US 3
- Socks, which is the overwhelming majority of it.
- Mittens and gloves, where a dense fabric is wanted for the same reason.
- Baby garments in fingering or sport, which are traditionally knitted fine.
- Hat brims, worked a size or two below the body so the ribbing grips.
