The short answer
US 0 is a 2.0mm needle. Buy it as steel double points or as a long circular for magic loop, because none of the interchangeable sets we cover goes that small - the widest starts at US 2 (2.75mm). Material matters more at 2mm than at any other size: steel and aluminum hold their shape, while bamboo and wood flex and can snap. Always buy on the millimeter figure, not the US number.

What US 0 actually is
US 0 is 2.0mm. It is the size below US 1 (2.25mm) and the size above US 00 (1.75mm), and it is the smallest size most people will ever need.

What people knit on US 0
In the Craft Yarn Council standard, category 0 lace yarn is worked on 1.5 to 2.25mm needles, and category 1 super fine - sock and fingering - on 2.25 to 3.25mm. US 0 sits exactly at the join between the two, which tells you what it is for.
- Dense, hard-wearing socks. Fingering yarn worked below its usual gauge makes a tight fabric that resists wear at the heel and toe. This is the commonest reason to own a US 0.
- Lace in lace-weight yarn, where the pattern wants a firmer fabric than the usual open lace gauge.
- Miniatures and doll clothes, where the scale of the finished object demands small stitches.
- Fine colorwork, worked in fingering yarn at a gauge tight enough for the motifs to read crisply.
- Baby items in fingering, where a tight gauge keeps small fingers out of the fabric.
The yarn side is on best yarn for socks, and a standard fingering sock yarn is a 75% wool, 25% nylon blend knitted on 2.75mm in its published gauge - so US 0 is a deliberate step tighter than the band suggests.
The criteria, in order
At most needle sizes the choice is about comfort. At 2mm it is about whether the needle survives, and then about comfort. That changes the order in which the specifications matter.
- Material strength. A 2mm needle is thin enough to bend in your hand. Steel and aluminum hold their shape under the tight tension fine knitting uses; bamboo and wood flex, and they can snap if you sit on them or lever a decrease.
- Format. Most US 0 knitting is in the round, so double points or a long circular. Straights suit only flat work.
- Point. A tapered point enters a small tight stitch without forcing it. Blunt points fight you at this scale.
- Join smoothness, on a circular. A catch at the join is felt on every stitch of every round, and at 2mm the stitches are small enough to snag on it.
- Grip against speed. Steel is fast and slick; bamboo is slower and holds the stitch. With slippery yarn, grip wins.
Why your interchangeable set cannot do this
This is the single most useful thing to know before buying, and it catches a lot of people.

An interchangeable tip has to be drilled for the screw or click join, and a 2mm shaft is too thin to drill without weakening it. That is why even the widest set on this site - thirteen pairs, and unusual for reaching US 2 - stops three quarters of a millimeter short. US 0 is a fixed-needle purchase. Double points are the traditional answer and they work well at US 0. Magic loop on a long circular does the same job with one needle, which many people find easier to put down and pick up. This is the one size range where we would steer most people away from wood and bamboo, which are otherwise excellent. The point is not that they are bad needles - it is that at 2mm the physics is against them, and a snapped needle mid-sock is a miserable way to find that out. Hands, and why fine knitting is harder on them
Fine knitting concentrates effort. The needles are thin, so the pinch force needed to hold them is higher; the stitches are small, so there are many more of them per inch; and the gauge is tight, so every stitch takes a little more effort to work.
- Take breaks. Twenty minutes of US 0 is more work than twenty minutes of US 8.
- Circulars put the weight in your lap rather than on the ends of the needles.
- A thicker or square shaft reduces pinch force, which is the case for the square-shafted pick above.

Checking an unmarked 2mm needle
At the fine end, needles lose their markings, painted sizes wear off, and a US 0 and a US 1 look identical in a drawer. A needle gauge settles it in a second: the Susan Bates Knit-Chek measures from US 0 / 2.0mm upward and does stitch and row gauge as well.
Needles below 2mm fall off the bottom of that gauge. If you knit at US 00 and finer, you will need a gauge that goes lower - best needle gauges and rulers covers the options.

2.0mm. It sits between US 00 (1.75mm) and US 1 (2.25mm). Check the millimeter figure as well as the US name when you buy - at the fine end the sizes are a quarter of a millimeter apart and easy to confuse.
What are US size 0 knitting needles used for?

Should I buy double points or a circular in US 0?
Either - they make identical fabric in the round. Double points are the traditional choice for socks; a 32in or longer circular used for magic loop does the same job with one needle. Straights only suit flat work, which is rare at this size.
How do I tell a US 0 from a US 1 needle?
Use a needle gauge. The two are 2.0mm and 2.25mm and are hard to tell apart by eye, and printed sizes wear off fine needles. A standard gauge measures from US 0 upward; anything finer needs a gauge that goes lower.
