Why lace is harder on a needle than anything else
Lace is decreases and yarn overs. A yarn over is an easy stitch. The decreases are not: k2tog, ssk, k3tog and centered double decreases all require the needle to enter two or three stitches at once, often stitches that are already tight from the previous row.
A blunt point cannot do that without a fight. It skates off the stitch, or it splits the ply and takes half the yarn with it. Over a 300-row shawl that friction is the difference between a project you finish and one that lives in a bag.
The three things a lace needle needs
1. A point that tapers a long way
Sharpness is really about taper length: how far back from the tip the needle reaches its full diameter. A long taper lets the tip find a gap before the shaft has to widen it.
Manufacturers rarely publish a taper measurement, which is why they use the word lace as a product name instead. ChiaoGoo's Red Lace tips and Knitter's Pride's sharp birch points are both named for it; Turbo tips are named for speed and are shaped accordingly.
2. A join that a stitch cannot catch on
Lace weight and fingering yarn find every imperfection. A join between tip and cable that has any step in it will snag a stitch every few rounds, and on fine yarn a snag can pull a stitch loose.

3. A cable with no memory
Lace shawls grow. A triangular shawl ends with several hundred stitches on the needle, and they all have to sit on the cable without bunching. A cable that holds the coil of its packaging will fight that the entire time.
ChiaoGoo specifies its red cables as memory-free multi-strand steel. That is a real spec, and it matters more on a shawl than on any other project.
The lifeline hole, which almost nobody mentions
Normally you thread a lifeline by hand with a tapestry needle, one stitch at a time, which is tedious enough that people skip it. A tip with a hole drilled through it lets you tie waste yarn to the tip and lay the lifeline as you knit the row, with no extra pass.
You will want a blunt tapestry needle either way, because a lifeline still has to be threaded by hand on any needle that lacks the hole.
Needle size for lace is not the yarn's size
Lace is deliberately knitted loose. The openwork only shows if the fabric is more air than yarn, so lace patterns routinely specify a needle two or three sizes larger than the ball band suggests for that weight.

Those ball band figures come from the Craft Yarn Council standard. The lace column is what patterns actually ask for, and it is why a lace knitter needs the larger sizes of a set even when the yarn is very fine - which in turn is why the Dreamz set, starting at 3.5mm, is more usable for lace than its size range first suggests.

Why do lace patterns use bigger needles than the yarn suggests?
Because the openwork only shows in a loose fabric. Lace is usually knitted two or three needle sizes above the ball band recommendation, which is why lace weight yarn is often worked on 3mm to 4mm needles.
What is a lifeline hole on a knitting needle?
A small hole drilled through the tip. You tie waste yarn to it and the needle lays a lifeline through every stitch as you knit the row, so you can rip back to that row safely instead of threading the lifeline by hand afterwards.
Are addi Turbo needles good for lace?
