Who it suits
Not most people. Straights are the mental image of knitting needles, and circulars do the same job plus everything straights cannot.
Why it is here
Polished bamboo in 9in and 13in lengths, 17 sizes in 9in and 15 in 13in. Nothing is wrong with them - the format is simply less useful than a circular of the same size.
What you give up
A circular knits flat as well as in the round, holds a wider piece, and puts the project's weight in your lap rather than on your wrists. Buy a circular first.

The three specifications that matter
Tip material
Metal is fast and slippery; wood and bamboo grip. That single difference decides more than any other property, and which one you want depends on your tension and your yarn.
A loose knitter working slippery yarn wants wood, or stitches will drop off the tip. A tight knitter working grabby wool wants metal, or every stitch is a fight. The full comparison is in bamboo vs metal knitting needles.
Point sharpness
Sharp points go into tight stitches and complex decreases easily, which is what lace and cabled work need. Blunt points are kinder on your fingertips and split loosely-plied yarn far less often.
ChiaoGoo lace tips are at the sharp end; addi Turbo tips are deliberately blunt. Neither is better - they are optimized for different knitting. ChiaoGoo vs addi is the head-to-head.
Cable behavior
Cheap cables have memory: they hold the coil of the packaging and fight you for the whole project. Good cables lie flat. ChiaoGoo's red nylon-coated steel cables are explicitly specified as memory-free, and Knitter's Pride uses nylon-coated stainless steel with swivel connectors.
If you have ever fought a needle whose cable kept curling the work into a spiral, that is the property you were missing, and it is worth paying for.

The size gap every set has
Almost every interchangeable set starts at US 4 (3.5mm), because the join cannot be drilled smaller without weakening it. Sock yarn wants 2.25 to 3.25mm.

Are metal or wooden knitting needles better?
Neither - they suit different knitters. Metal is fast and slippery and suits tight knitters and grabby yarn; wood grips and suits loose knitters and slippery yarn.
Do I need straight needles?
Almost certainly not. A circular needle knits flat as well as in the round, holds wider pieces, and puts the project's weight in your lap instead of on your wrists.
Why do my needle cables curl?
The cable has memory - it is holding the shape of its packaging. Better sets use memory-free cables. You can relax a coiled cable temporarily by running it through warm water.
What is a lifeline hole in a knitting needle?
A small hole drilled through the tip. Thread it with waste yarn and knit a row, and the yarn is automatically drawn through every stitch as a lifeline - which lets you rip back safely to that row.
