Best Budget Knitting Needles
The gap between a cheap needle and an expensive one is smaller than the gap between a cheap set and an expensive one.

The short answer
Buy fixed circulars one at a time. A cheap aluminum or bamboo needle does the job a needle has to do - be smooth, straight and the size it says - and those are not expensive properties. What costs money is the join on an interchangeable set, the finish on a premium tip and the cable that does not kink. Skip the cheap unbranded set: it is the one budget purchase that genuinely fails.
What to look for on a budget
A needle has a short list of jobs. Spending more buys refinement on top of those jobs, not the jobs themselves - which is why the cheap end of this category is unusually good.
- Accurate diameter. The needle must be the size printed on it, because your gauge depends on it. Branded needles are reliable here and unbranded ones are the usual offenders.
- A smooth surface and a smooth join. Anything that catches the yarn will catch it on every stitch for the life of the needle.
- A cable with little memory, if it is a circular. A cheap cable that holds coils fights you all the way up a sweater.
- A point shape that suits your yarn - blunter for splitty yarn, sharper for lace. Neither costs more than the other.
- A size marking that survives. Etched or printed on the thumb rest; unmarked needles become mystery needles.
- Not: exotic materials, cases, or a set. Those are the parts you are paying extra for.

Why it is here
Anodized aluminum single points, 10in long at 5mm, color coded by size. Aluminum is smooth, straight and dimensionally accurate - the things that actually matter in a needle - and none of them cost much to get right.
What you give up
A thin bare shaft, so it is harder on the hands over a long session than anything with a grip. Straights also cannot knit in the round, which caps what you can make with them.

Where cheap genuinely fails
Two purchases, specifically.
- Unbranded interchangeable sets. The join is the hardest part of the needle to make well and the first thing a low price removes. A set whose tips unscrew mid-row, whose cables hold a coil and whose joins catch every stitch is worse than no set - and those are exactly the failures that make interchangeables worth owning when they are done properly.
- Very fine needles in soft materials. Bamboo at 2mm snaps. If you are knitting socks or lace, that is the one place to spend - see best US size 0 knitting needles.
The arithmetic of a set
A set costs roughly what eight to twelve fixed circulars cost. That is the whole decision, and it turns on how much you knit rather than on how good the set is.

A budget starter kit
- One 5mm circular, 24in or 32in. This is the needle most beginner patterns and tutorials assume.
- One 4mm circular when a DK pattern turns up.
- A set of double points when your first hat reaches the crown.
- A needle gauge, so an unmarked needle never becomes a mystery.
- Nothing else until you have finished two or three projects and know what you prefer.

Are cheap knitting needles worth buying?
Individual ones, yes. A needle needs to be smooth, straight and the size it claims, and none of those cost much. Cheap interchangeable sets are the exception - the join is the hardest part to make well and the first thing a low price removes.
What is the cheapest knitting needle that is still good?
A bare anodized aluminum single point, or a fixed bamboo circular. Both do everything a needle has to do. The circular is the better buy because it also knits in the round and holds a larger project.
How many needles do I actually need to start?
One. A 5mm circular, 24in or 32in, covers almost every beginner pattern. Add a 4mm when a DK pattern turns up and double points when your first hat reaches the crown.
When does an interchangeable set become worth it?
At around five sizes. A set costs roughly what eight to twelve fixed circulars cost, so below that you are buying sizes you will not use. Check the smallest tip first if you intend to knit socks.
Do cheap needles affect your gauge?
They can, if the diameter is not accurate - which is the main risk with unbranded needles. A needle gauge settles it in seconds and is worth owning whatever you buy.
