KnitPro Dreamz Fixed Circular Needle, US 9 (5.5mm), 24in

The short answer

US 9 is 5.5mm, and it is the only needle size the standard gives to two yarn weights at once - worsted runs 4.5 to 5.5mm (US 7 to 9) and bulky starts at 5.5mm (US 9 to 11). That makes it less a size patterns name and more the size you move to when your gauge is tight on a US 8, or down to when a bulky yarn is sloppy on a US 10. Buy a 24in fixed circular if you are buying one needle, double points for sleeve cuffs and hat crowns, and a 40in cable if the project is wider than about 30 inches. Skip 9in straights at this gauge - they hold around 36 stitches and a scarf needs more.

KnitPro Dreamz Fixed Circular Needle, US 9 (5.5mm), 24in

KnitPro Dreamz Fixed Circular Needle, US 9 (5.5mm), 24in

KnitPro · Best for sweater bodies, hats, cowls - the everyday 5.5mm needle

Laminated birch tips at 5.5mm on a 24in cord - wood grip at the one size where worsted and bulky overlap. Sold as Knitter's Pride in North America until KnitPro unified the names in 2024.

Tips

Material
Laminated birch, polished
Marking
Size etched on the metal needle base
Format
Fixed circular

Who it suits

Anyone who got 5.5mm on a swatch and now needs the needle, and anyone who prefers wood to metal.

Why it is here

US 9 (5.5mm), 24in (60cm) overall on a 13.9in cord, with 5.05in laminated birch tips, one color per size and the size etched on the metal needle base. Twenty-four inches is the most useful single length at this gauge - it handles a sweater body, a hat on magic loop and flat knitting. The brand note worth knowing: this line sold as Knitter's Pride in North America until KnitPro unified the names in 2024, so both spellings are the same needle.

What you give up

One length per purchase, and wood tips are blunter than steel on a tight decrease. Laminated birch is strong but it is still wood - if you knit tightly enough to flex a needle, choose steel.

ChiaoGoo Red 6in Stainless Double Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm)

ChiaoGoo Red 6in Stainless Double Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm)

ChiaoGoo · Best for sleeve cuffs, hat crowns, mittens

Five stainless double points at 5.5mm - the size a worsted sleeve cuff and a bulky hat crown both land on.

Size
US 9 (5.5mm)
Material
Stainless steel, precisely machined
Length
6in (15cm)
Pack
Five needles
Point and finish
Tapered points, satin finish
Marking
Size laser etched on every needle

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a sweater in the round who has reached the sleeves, and anyone closing a hat.

Why it is here

Five 6in (15cm) stainless steel double points at US 9 (5.5mm), precisely machined, with tapered points, a satin finish and the size laser etched on every needle. This is the size most worsted sleeve cuffs land on once you have gone up from a US 8 body, and steel does not flex when a nearly-finished sleeve puts its weight on a short needle.

What you give up

Steel is slick, and 5.5mm stitches are large enough to slide off the idle needles if you put the work down mid-round. Six-inch points also hold relatively few stitches at this gauge.

03Best for blankets and shawls
KnitPro Dreamz Fixed Circular Needle, US 9 (5.5mm), 40in

KnitPro Dreamz Fixed Circular Needle, US 9 (5.5mm), 40in

KnitPro · Best for anything wider than about 30 inches

The same birch tips on a 40in cord - the length a blanket or a large shawl actually needs at this gauge.

Size
US 9 (5.5mm)
Length
40in (100cm) overall, 29.9in cord
Tips
5.05in laminated birch, one color per size
Material
Laminated birch, polished

Size etched on the metal needle base
Format
Fixed circular

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a throw, a large shawl or a wide wrap, and anyone whose stitches are stretched tight on a 24in cable.

Why it is here

US 9 (5.5mm), 40in (100cm) overall on a 29.9in cord, same 5.05in laminated birch tips. A 5.5mm stitch takes noticeably more cable than a 4mm one, so a wide project fills a 24in cord far sooner than people expect - and stitches stretched tight across a short cable distort your gauge reading as well as being unpleasant to work.

What you give up

Forty inches is unwieldy for a hat or a sleeve, so this is a second needle rather than a first. The long cord also needs managing on a small project.

04Best straights
Susan Bates Silvalume Single Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm), 14in

Susan Bates Silvalume Single Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm), 14in

Susan Bates · Best for scarves and flat panels, for anyone who prefers straights

Fourteen-inch aluminum straights at 5.5mm - long enough to hold a scarf's width, which the 9in bamboo version is not.

Size
US 9 (5.5mm)
Material
Aluminum, anodized, heat treated and polished
Length
14in
Pack
Two needles - one pair
Knob
No-roll shape, US and metric size printed on it
Color
Red, per the listing

Who it suits

Anyone who knits flat and dislikes circulars, and anyone making a scarf or a blanket square.

Why it is here

A pair of 14in anodized aluminum straights at US 9 (5.5mm), heat treated and polished, with a no-roll knob carrying the US and metric size printed on it. Fourteen inches rather than ten matters here: 5.5mm stitches are wide, so a scarf fills a short needle quickly and then the stitches crowd and fall off the end.

What you give up

Straights only knit flat, and aluminum is slick at a size where the stitches are already large. Printed sizing on the knob also wears less well than etched sizing on the needle itself.

ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Interchangeable Set (Complete, 5in tips)

Notable
Lifeline hole in each tip; memory-free cable
Also included
Stitch markers, two keys, needle gauge, stoppers, connector, case

Who it suits

Anyone who keeps buying the boundary sizes one at a time, which is exactly what US 9 makes you do.

Why it is here

Thirteen pairs of 5in surgical-grade stainless tips covering US 2-15 (2.75-10mm) on memory-free multi-strand steel cables with a red nylon coating, plus stitch markers, two keys, a needle gauge, stoppers and a connector. For this size specifically a set earns its price: gauge adjustment means moving between US 8, 9 and 10, and owning all three is the whole point.

What you give up

Five-inch tips are short, which some hands dislike on a long session. It is also a significant purchase to make for one needle size - buy it because you want the set, not because you want 5.5mm.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm), 9in

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 9 (5.5mm), 9in

Clover · Best for narrow flat work only - not a scarf

The cheapest 5.5mm on the page, and nine inches long - which is the problem rather than the feature at this gauge.

Size
US 9 (5.5mm)
Length
9in
Material
Bamboo
Point
Tapered
Sold as
A pair, one size per pack
Format
Single point - flat knitting only

Who it suits

Only someone making something genuinely narrow - a strap, a headband, a swatch.

Why it is here

A pair of 9in bamboo single points at US 9 (5.5mm), tapered, flat knitting only. The bamboo itself is fine and the price is the lowest on this page. The problem is arithmetic: at 5.5mm you get roughly four stitches to the inch, so a 9in needle holds about 36 stitches before they crowd the tip - and a basic scarf is 40 or more. People buy it for a scarf and fight it for the whole project.

What you give up

You give up a few dollars by choosing the 14in straights instead. If you specifically want bamboo straights, the same Takumi line is made in 13in and 14in - buy that length rather than this one.

Specifications from Clover USA - Takumi bamboo single point needles. We have not handled this item - see how we pick.

The only size in two bands

Most needle sizes belong to one yarn weight. 5.5mm belongs to two, and that is the whole character of the size.

The two bands that meet at 5.5mm, from the standard weight system.
CategoryCommon namesNeedle rangeKnit gauge / 4in
3 LightDK, light worsted3.75-4.5mm (US 5 to 7)21-24 sts
4 MediumWorsted, afghan, aran4.5-5.5mm (US 7 to 9)16-20 sts
5 BulkyChunky, craft, rug5.5-8mm (US 9 to 11)12-15 sts

Worsted tops out at 5.5mm. Bulky starts at 5.5mm. US 9 is the overlap, which means a pattern naming it has told you very little about the yarn - unlike a US 10, which is bulky and nothing else, or a US 8, which is the worsted default.

US 8, 9 or 10?

This is the decision this size actually poses, and it is not answered by the pattern - it is answered by your own swatch.

The three sizes around worsted, and what each produces.
NeedleMetricWith worstedWith bulky
US 74.5mmDense, firm - good for bagsToo tight to work
US 85.0mmThe default; most patternsVery dense
US 95.5mmLooser, drapier worstedDense, structured bulky
US 106.0mmLoose, open worstedThe bulky default
US 118.0mmToo open - gapsLoose, fast bulky
  1. Swatch on the size the pattern names first. Usually US 8 for worsted.
  2. Count stitches over four inches, not one. A single inch multiplies small errors across a garment.
  3. Too many stitches means go up. More stitches per inch than the pattern says means your fabric is tighter than intended - US 9 is the next step.
  4. Too few means go down, to a US 7.
  5. Wash and dry the swatch before you measure. Superwash merino in particular grows, and a dry unwashed swatch will send you to the wrong needle.
  6. Match the stitch gauge and let row gauge go if you can only have one. Width is what makes a garment fit.

Cable length at 5.5mm

A 5.5mm stitch is meaningfully wider than a 4mm one, and cable length is the thing people underestimate when they move up the scale.

  • 16in - hats and yokes. Too short for anything flat.
  • 24in - the default single purchase. Sweater bodies, flat knitting, magic loop for sleeves.
  • 32in - a roomier sweater body, and comfortable for a large shawl.
  • 40in and up - blankets, wide wraps, and anything over about 30 inches across.
  • Stitches stretched tight across a short cable distort your gauge reading, so if you are swatching in the round on a cable that is too short, the number you get is not your gauge.

Circular needle cable lengths has the full length-to-project mapping, and interchangeable needle cables and connectors covers buying cables separately if you own a set.

Every set includes this one

Where each interchangeable set we list reaches.
SetTip rangeUS 9 included?
ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace CompleteUS 2-15 (2.75-10mm)Yes
addi Click TurboUS 4-15 (3.5-10mm)Yes
Knitter's Pride Dreamz DeluxeUS 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm)Yes

Unlike US 15, which two of these three reach only at the very top and the third misses entirely, 5.5mm sits comfortably inside all of them. If you own any set, check the case before buying anything - and if you do not own one, this is the size that makes the argument for a set, because gauge adjustment means wanting US 8, 9 and 10 within the same project.

What people knit at 5.5mm

  1. Worsted sweaters at a looser gauge, which is the commonest reason this size is bought.
  2. Bulky hats and cowls that want structure rather than drape - 5.5mm gives a denser bulky fabric than a US 10 does.
  3. Blankets in worsted, where a slightly open fabric is warmer for the weight and much faster.
  4. Shawls in worsted or aran, where drape matters and a US 8 fabric would be stiff.
  5. Worsted held with a strand of mohair, which lands around this gauge - holding mohair double has the arithmetic.

For what to put on the needle, best needles for chunky yarn approaches the same range from the yarn side, and the needle size chart has every US-to-metric conversion.

Buying without getting the wrong size

  • Buy on the millimeter figure. US 9 is 5.5mm. The sizes either side are 5.0mm and 6.0mm, and listings at adjacent sizes are mixed up constantly.
  • Watch for US 9 versus 9in. Several products in this category are described by length, and a 'Takumi 9-inch, Size 9' is both at once - read which number is which.
  • Check the cable length in the title, not the photo. The same tip size is sold on five different cords.
  • Metric-only listings are common, especially from European brands. A needle sold as 5.5mm with no US number is a US 9.
  • If you own a set, you already have it. All three sets above include 5.5mm.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a US 9 knitting needle in mm?

US 9 is 5.5mm. The sizes either side are US 8 at 5.0mm and US 10 at 6.0mm, so the steps here are half a millimeter - small enough that buying the wrong one is easy and noticeable.

What yarn do you use with size 9 needles?

Both worsted and bulky. The standard puts worsted at 4.5 to 5.5mm and bulky at 5.5 to 8mm, so 5.5mm is the only size claimed by two weight bands. With worsted it gives a looser, drapier fabric than a US 8; with bulky it gives a denser, more structured one than a US 10.

Should I use US 8 or US 9 for worsted yarn?

Start with US 8 - that is what most worsted patterns assume - then swatch. If you get more stitches to four inches than the pattern calls for, your fabric is too tight and US 9 is the next step up. Wash and dry the swatch before measuring, because some yarns grow.

Is US 9 the same as 5.5mm?

Yes. A needle sold as 5.5mm with no US number is a US 9, which is common with European brands. Buy on the millimeter figure - it is the one that cannot be ambiguous.

What cable length do I need for size 9 needles?

24 inches as a single purchase - it covers sweater bodies, flat knitting and magic loop. Go to 40 inches for a blanket or a wide shawl, because a 5.5mm stitch takes noticeably more cable than a finer one and stitches stretched tight across a short cord also distort your gauge reading.

Do interchangeable needle sets include US 9?

All three we list do - the ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete (US 2-15), the addi Click Turbo (US 4-15) and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe (US 4-11). Check your case before buying a single needle, and note this is the size that makes the best argument for owning a set, because gauge adjustment means wanting US 8, 9 and 10 together.

Are 9 inch straight needles long enough at this size?

Usually not. At 5.5mm you get roughly four stitches to the inch, so a 9in needle holds about 36 stitches before they crowd the tip - and a plain scarf is 40 or more. Choose 13in or 14in straights at this gauge, or use a circular and knit flat on it.
