Best US Size 15 Knitting Needles

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 15 (10mm), 29in

The short answer

US 15 is 10mm. It sits in the middle of the super bulky band, which the standard puts at 8mm to 12.75mm (US 11 to 17), and it is the largest size any interchangeable set we list actually reaches. Buy a bamboo fixed circular if you are buying one needle - grip matters more than speed at this diameter, because a heavy stitch slides off slick metal. Buy a 40in cable if you are making a blanket, because at 10mm your stitches are fat and a 29in cord fills up far sooner than you expect. And check the millimeter figure rather than the US number: 9mm, 10mm and 12.75mm are US 13, 15 and 17, the jumps between them are large, and retail listings at this end of the scale confuse them constantly.

Every row jumps to that pick below. The price button goes to Amazon.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 15 (10mm), 29in

Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 15 (10mm), 29in

Clover · Best for chunky hats, cowls, scarves and bulky sweater bodies

Bamboo tips at 10mm on a 29in cord - grip where you need it most, because a super-bulky stitch slides off smooth metal.

Size
US 15 (10mm)
Length

Material
Bamboo
Format
Fixed circular
Cord
Flexible soft cord, seamless join
Sold as
One needle, one size per pack

Who it suits

Anyone buying their first 10mm needle, and anyone who has watched fat stitches slide off a metal needle.

Why it is here

US 15 (10mm) bamboo tips on a flexible soft cord, 29in. Bamboo is the right call here for a reason that gets stronger as the needle gets bigger: a super-bulky stitch is heavy, and a heavy stitch on a slick needle slides off whenever you put the work down. Bamboo grips. Twenty-nine inches also covers almost everything at this gauge except a blanket.

What you give up

One size and one length per pack. Bamboo at 10mm is a thick dowel and it will flex under a tight chunky stitch - if you knit tightly, the steel option below will not. It is also blunter than steel, which fights you on a three-stitch decrease.

ChiaoGoo Red Lace Circular Needle, US 15 (10mm), 40in

ChiaoGoo · Best for chunky blankets, wraps and anything over about 30 inches wide

Stainless tips on a memory-free 40in cable - the one needle on this page that will hold a blanket's width.

Cable

Size permanently laser engraved on each needle
Line range
1.5mm to 15mm; 12.75mm and 15mm from 60cm cable upward

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a throw or afghan in super bulky, and anyone whose cable keeps coiling up and fighting them.

Why it is here

US 15 (10mm), model 7040-15, on a 40in (102cm) cable. Stainless steel with a matte finish and a finely tapered lace tip; the cable is a memory-free multi-strand steel core in a red nylon coating, so it hangs straight out of the packet instead of corkscrewing. The size is permanently laser engraved, which at this end of the scale is worth having - 9mm, 10mm and 12.75mm needles look identical in a jar.

What you give up

Steel is slick, and that is the opposite of what a heavy super-bulky stitch wants. Expect to be more careful putting the work down. It is also the most expensive needle on this page by a wide margin, and 40in is awkwardly long for a hat.

ChiaoGoo Patina Bamboo Double Point Needles, US 15 (10mm), 8in

ChiaoGoo Patina Bamboo Double Point Needles, US 15 (10mm), 8in

ChiaoGoo · Best for closing a chunky hat, and chunky mittens

Eight-inch bamboo double points at 10mm - long enough to hold the few fat stitches a chunky hat crown comes down to.

Size
US 15 (10mm)
Length
8in (20cm)
Material
Moso bamboo
Finish
Patina color obtained with thermal heat
Point
Precisely tapered, hand-crafted tips
Marking
Size permanently laser imprinted on each needle and cap
Line range
US 1 (2.25mm) to US 15 (10mm)

Who it suits

Anyone who has knitted a chunky hat on a 16in circular and reached the decreases with nowhere to put the stitches.

Why it is here

US 15 (10mm) in 8in (20cm) Moso bamboo, with precisely tapered hand-crafted tips and the size laser imprinted on each needle and cap. The patina color is produced with thermal heat rather than a coating, so there is no finish to wear off. Eight inches rather than six matters at 10mm: a fat stitch takes up a lot of needle, and a 6in double point runs out of room fast.

What you give up

Double points at this diameter hold surprisingly few stitches, so a crown needs more needles in play than it would in worsted. Bamboo at 10mm is also chunky enough to be awkward in a small hand, and the set is priced oddly high for what it is.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 15 (10mm), 14in

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 15 (10mm), 14in

Clover · Best for a chunky scarf, and owning the size for under ten dollars

Fourteen-inch bamboo straights at 10mm - the cheapest way to own the size, and long enough for a chunky scarf's width.

Size
US 15 (10mm)
Length
14in
Material
Bamboo
Point
Tapered
Sold as
A pair, one size per pack
Format
Single point - flat knitting only

Who it suits

Anyone who needs 10mm for one flat project and does not want to spend more than the yarn cost.

Why it is here

US 15 (10mm) bamboo single points at 14in, sold as a pair. Fourteen inches rather than nine is the right choice at this gauge - chunky stitches are wide, so a scarf fills a short needle quickly and then the stitches bunch and fall off the end.

What you give up

Straights only knit flat, and most of what people make at 10mm beyond a scarf is either worked in the round or too heavy to hang off two levers. A super-bulky blanket on straights is genuinely unpleasant - the weight sits on your wrists for every row.

ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Interchangeable Set (Complete, 5in tips)

Notable
Lifeline hole in each tip; memory-free cable
Also included
Stitch markers, two keys, needle gauge, stoppers, connector, case

Who it suits

Anyone who already wanted an interchangeable set and would rather not buy single needles size by size.

Why it is here

Thirteen pairs of 5in surgical-grade stainless tips covering US 2-15 (2.75-10mm), on memory-free multi-strand steel cables with a red nylon coating, plus stitch markers, two keys, a needle gauge, stoppers and a connector. US 15 is the top of its range, so this set is the one that genuinely removes the need to buy 10mm separately.

What you give up

The cables top out at 30in, so this set reaches the size but not the blanket - you would still want the 40in fixed circular above for a throw. The tips are also 5in, which is short, and a short tip in a fat yarn gives your hand less to hold.

Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe Interchangeable Set

Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe Interchangeable Set

Knitter's Pride · Best for everything below 8mm - not this

Nine pairs of laminated-birch tips, color-coded by size, on swivel cables - the usual first interchangeable set for anyone who does not get on with metal.

Cables
Nylon-coated stainless steel, 360-degree swivel, silver connectors

Who it suits

Nobody buying it FOR this size. It is listed here so you check the case before you spend again.

Why it is here

Nine pairs of 4.5in densified laminated birch tips covering US 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm). That is a genuinely useful range and 8mm is where it ends - two full sizes below 10mm. The gap is not a defect, it is where the manufacturer drew the line, but the set is sold as a complete solution and this is the size it does not solve.

What you give up

You give up nothing by owning it - just do not expect it to cover super bulky. Pair it with one of the single 10mm needles above rather than replacing the set.

Specifications from Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe set specification. We have not handled this item - see how we pick.

Where 10mm sits

At the fine end of the scale the sizes are a quarter-millimeter apart and the bands overlap. Up here the steps are enormous and each one is a different fabric.

The top of the US scale, from the standard conversion set.
US sizeMetricBandStep up from the last
118.0mmBulky to super bulky+2.0mm from US 10
139.0mmSuper bulky+1.0mm
1510.0mmSuper bulky+1.0mm
1712.75mmSuper bulky to jumbo+2.75mm
1915.0mmJumbo+2.25mm

There is no US 14 or US 16. The scale simply skips, which is why substituting a nearby size is a much bigger change here than it would be in sock knitting - going from US 15 to US 17 is a 27% jump in needle diameter. The full set of conversions is on the needle size chart.

10mm is above what most super-bulky labels suggest

This catches people, and it is worth understanding rather than treating as an error. Pull three super-bulky yarns off the shelf and read the recommended needle:

Published gauge and needle on the super-bulky yarns this site lists.
YarnWeightLabel needlePublished gauge
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick6 Super BulkyUS 13 (9mm)9 sts x 12 rows / 4in
Bernat Blanket6 Super BulkyUS 11 (8mm)8 sts x 13 rows / 4in
Bernat Blanket Extra7 JumboUS 17 (12.75mm)5 sts x 7 rows / 4in

Two of the three name a needle smaller than 10mm, and the standard's own super-bulky band runs 8mm to 12.75mm, so US 15 is mid-band rather than extreme. Both things are true at once: the labels aim low because a denser fabric wears better and sheds less, and the standard aims at the middle because that is where the published gauge lands.

The cable is the real decision

At 4mm, cable length is a convenience. At 10mm it decides whether the project is physically possible, because each stitch occupies roughly two and a half times the cable a worsted stitch would.

  1. 16in - too short for almost everything here. A chunky hat brim barely fits, and most people move to double points for the crown anyway.
  2. 24in to 29in - hats, cowls, scarves, sleeves and a bulky sweater body. This is the single-needle default and what the overall pick uses.
  3. 32in - a comfortable sweater body with room to spread the stitches out and look at them.
  4. 40in and up - blankets, throws and wraps. At 10mm a 50in-wide throw is roughly 100 stitches, and 100 super-bulky stitches will not sit on a 29in cable without being stretched tight.
  5. Magic loop does not really work here. The technique needs slack cable to pull through, and fat stitches leave none. Use double points for small circumferences at this gauge.

If you are buying into a system rather than a single needle, interchangeable needle cables and connectors covers buying cables separately, and circular needle cable lengths has the full length-to-project mapping.

US 15 is the ceiling for two of the three and outside the third entirely, which is the opposite of the problem sets usually have. At the fine end, two of these cannot make sock sizes - best US size 4 knitting needles covers that gap. Up here the question is simply whether your set reaches 10mm, and if you own the Dreamz Deluxe it does not.

Bamboo or metal at this size

The usual answer on this site is that it is a preference. At 10mm it is closer to a real decision, because two things change.

  • Weight. A super-bulky stitch is heavy. On a slick steel needle, a put-down project sheds stitches off the tip in a way it never does in fingering weight. Bamboo's grip is doing real work here.
  • Flex. A 10mm bamboo needle is a thick dowel, but it is still wood, and a tight chunky stitch will bend it. Steel at this diameter does not move at all. If you knit tightly, that is the argument for metal.
  • Speed matters less. The reason people choose slick metal is stitches-per-minute. At 10mm you are making so few stitches per row that the saving is small.
  • Warmth, if that matters to you. Metal at this diameter is a noticeably cold thing to hold.

Bamboo vs metal knitting needles works the comparison through properly across all sizes.

What people knit at 10mm

  1. Chunky blankets and throws, which is the commonest use and the reason this size sells at all.
  2. Chunky hats, cowls and scarves, fast enough to be an evening or a weekend.
  3. Bulky sweaters, where the appeal is finishing in a week rather than a season.
  4. Worsted held triple, which lands around super bulky and is how a lot of people use up oddments - see holding mohair double for the gauge arithmetic, which works the same way for any held strands.
  5. Not arm knitting. That needs weight 7 jumbo and no needle at all. If that is what you are after, best yarn for arm knitting is the page.

Buying without getting the wrong needle

  • Buy on the millimeter figure. US 13, 15 and 17 are 9mm, 10mm and 12.75mm, and listings mix them up. The number in brackets is the one that is true.
  • Check the cable length in the listing title, not the photo. The same tip size is sold on five different cords.
  • Metric-only listings are common at this end, because super bulky is popular in markets that never used the US scale. A needle sold as '10mm' with no US number is a US 15.
  • If you own a set, check the case first. Two of the three sets here already include this size.
  • Buy one, not a bundle. Most people need exactly one 10mm needle, and the multi-size bundles at this diameter are mostly sizes you will never touch.

For what to put on it, best needles for chunky yarn approaches the same question from the yarn side, and best chunky yarn covers the yarn itself.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a US 15 knitting needle in mm?

US 15 is 10.0mm. The sizes either side are US 13 at 9mm and US 17 at 12.75mm - there is no US 14 or US 16, so the steps at this end of the scale are large.

What yarn do you use with size 15 needles?

Super bulky, category 6, which the standard puts at 8mm to 12.75mm. US 15 sits mid-band. Note that many super-bulky labels suggest a smaller needle than 10mm - Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick names US 13 and Bernat Blanket names US 11 - because a denser fabric wears better. Going up to 10mm gives you a looser, drapier fabric.

Is a 10mm knitting needle the same as US 15?

Yes. A needle sold as 10mm with no US number is a US 15, which is common because super bulky is popular in markets that never used the US scale. Buy on the millimeter figure - it is the one that cannot be ambiguous.

What cable length do I need for size 15 needles?

24in to 29in for hats, cowls, scarves and sweater bodies; 40in or longer for a blanket. At 10mm each stitch takes roughly two and a half times the cable a worsted stitch would, so a 50in-wide throw is about 100 stitches and will not sit on a 29in cord.

Do interchangeable needle sets include US 15?

Two of the three we list do, and it is the top tip in both: the ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete runs US 2-15 and the addi Click Turbo runs US 4-15. The Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe stops at US 11 (8mm), two sizes short, so Dreamz owners buy 10mm separately.

Can you use US 15 needles for arm knitting?

No - arm knitting uses your forearms instead of needles and needs weight 7 jumbo yarn. US 15 is a needle for super bulky yarn, which is one category finer. They are different techniques that get confused because both produce a chunky-looking blanket.

Bamboo or metal at 10mm?

Bamboo for most people. A super-bulky stitch is heavy and slides off slick metal whenever you put the work down, and the speed advantage metal usually gives you barely registers when a row is only forty stitches. Choose steel if you knit tightly enough to flex a wooden needle.
