Berroco Vintage DK

The short answer

Buy Berroco Vintage DK for a garment that has to be washable - 288 yards to a 100g ball at 22 stitches to four inches on a US 6, with enough wool to give the fabric body. Buy Paintbox Cotton DK if you need many colors, because its 50g balls suit colorwork and granny squares. Buy Truboo for drape, Bernat Softee Baby for baby knitting and Mandala for a self-striping shawl. The thing to check before any of them: DK is 21 to 24 stitches over four inches on US 5 to 7, and plenty of yarn sold as DK sits a half-step either side of that - including Patons Grace at 24 stitches on a 3.75mm needle.

Berroco Vintage DK

Berroco Vintage DK

Berroco · Best for garments that have to be washable

The wool-content DK that goes in the washing machine - 288 yards to a 100g ball, which is a lot of fabric for the money.

Weight
DK / light worsted

Knit gauge
22 sts x 28 rows to 4in on US 6 (4mm)
Crochet hook
F (4.00mm)
Care
Machine wash gentle (30C/85F), dry flat

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a DK sweater or cardigan, especially for a child, and anyone who wants wool content without hand washing.

Why it is here

52% acrylic, 40% wool, 8% nylon, DK / light worsted, 100g (3.53oz) balls at 288yd (263m), published gauge 22 sts x 28 rows to 4in on US 6 (4mm), crochet hook F (4.00mm), machine wash gentle at 30C/85F and dry flat. Twenty-two stitches on a 4mm needle is textbook DK, and the blend is the point: enough wool to give the fabric body and warmth, enough acrylic and nylon to survive a washing machine and resist pilling. The yardage is unusually generous for the weight.

What you give up

Forty percent wool means it will not block the way a pure wool does, and the acrylic content limits how much the fabric evens out. Dry flat rather than tumble, despite the machine wash.

02Best cotton DK
Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK

Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK

Paintbox Yarns · Best for summer garments, blankets, colorwork in cotton

Plain 100% cotton at DK weight in a 50g ball - the cheapest way to buy a known cotton gauge in a lot of colors.

Fiber

Weight
DK / light worsted

Gauge
22 sts x 30 rows to 4in
Hook
F (4.00mm)
Care
Machine wash 40C/105F, no bleach, do not tumble dry, iron medium

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a cotton garment, a granny-square blanket or anything needing more than three shades.

Why it is here

100% cotton, DK / light worsted, 50g (1.76oz) balls at 137yd (125m), published gauge 22 sts x 30 rows to 4in on US 6 (4mm), hook F (4.00mm), machine wash at 40C/105F, no tumble dry, iron medium. Fifty-gram balls are the specification that matters here: a colorwork or granny-square project needs small amounts of many shades, and buying that in 100g balls wastes most of what you pay for.

What you give up

No elasticity, so ribbing will not spring back and a garment hangs rather than hugs. Cotton is also heavy for its yardage, which a long cardigan will show in the hem.

03Best for drape
Lion Brand Truboo

Lion Brand Truboo

Lion Brand · Best for tops, shawls, anything that should hang

Rayon from bamboo, in DK - the drapiest widely stocked plant yarn, and the one people mean when they say bamboo yarn.

Fiber
100% rayon from bamboo
Weight
3 Light / DK
Skein
3.5oz / 100g, 241yd / 220m
Gauge
23 sts x 32 rows on US 6 (4mm)
Hook
G-6 (4mm), 18 sc x 20 rows
Care
Machine wash, lay flat to dry

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a summer top, a drapey cardigan or a shawl that should fall rather than stand.

Why it is here

100% rayon from bamboo, category 3 light/DK, 3.5oz/100g skeins at 241yd/220m, published gauge 23 sts x 32 rows on US 6 (4mm) and 18 sc x 20 rows on G-6 (4mm), machine wash and lay flat to dry. Rayon is a regenerated fiber with almost no memory, which is exactly why it drapes - the fabric follows gravity instead of holding a shape.

What you give up

That lack of memory is also the catch: rayon is weak when wet and a garment hung up damp will lengthen permanently. It also splits readily on a sharp needle tip. [Best bamboo yarn](/yarn-by-project/best-bamboo-yarn) covers the drying rule in detail.

04Best for baby knitting
Bernat Softee Baby

Bernat Softee Baby

Bernat · Best for anything a baby wears and a parent washes constantly

A DK-weight acrylic with 362 yards to the 140g ball - the practical default for anything a baby will wear and a parent will wash constantly.

Fiber
100% acrylic
Weight
3 DK / light
Ball
5oz / 140g, 362yd / 331m (solids)
Gauge
22 sts x 30 rows on 4mm (US 6)
Hook
4mm (US G/6), 16 sc x 19 rows
Care
Machine wash cool, dry flat

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a baby cardigan, a pram blanket or a christening gift that has to be washable.

Why it is here

100% acrylic, category 3 DK/light, 5oz/140g balls at 362yd/331m (solids), published gauge 22 sts x 30 rows to 4in on 4mm (US 6) and 16 sc x 19 rows on 4mm (US G/6), machine wash cool and dry flat. Twenty-two stitches on 4mm is the same gauge as the Berroco, so DK patterns substitute cleanly. The 140g ball is the practical advantage - a whole baby cardigan from one ball with no dye-lot join.

What you give up

All acrylic, so no breathability and no blocking. The softness is a surface property of the fiber and it will dull with washing over a year or two.

05Best self-striping
Lion Brand Mandala

Lion Brand Mandala

Lion Brand · Best for a striped shawl or blanket with no ends to weave

A self-striping cake with long, seamless color changes - one ball produces a whole striped shawl with no ends to join.

Fiber
100% acrylic
Weight
3 Light / DK
Cake
150g, 590yd
Color change
Self-striping, long seamless transitions
Family
Mandala Ombre is the thicker, more subtle worsted-weight sibling

Who it suits

Anyone who wants color without buying five balls, and anyone who hates weaving in ends.

Why it is here

100% acrylic, category 3 light/DK, 150g cakes at 590yd, self-striping with long seamless transitions. The seamless part is the specification worth paying for: colors change gradually inside the strand, so a shawl stripes itself with no joins at all. Five hundred and ninety yards is enough for most one-skein shawl patterns outright.

What you give up

You get the color sequence the maker chose and nothing else - no control over where a stripe falls. The long repeats also mean two projects from the same cake will not match.

Patons Grace

Patons Grace

Patons · Best for fine crochet garments, not dk knitting

A smooth DK cotton with a hard twist and a sheen - the drapey cotton most crochet garment patterns are written for.

Fiber
100% cotton
Weight
3 DK (light)
Ball
50g (1.8oz), 136yd (125m)
Knit gauge

Crochet gauge
21 sc x 24 rows on 3.75mm (US F/5)
Care
Hand wash cool, dry flat, no bleach, no iron

Who it suits

Nobody substituting into a DK pattern without reworking the numbers.

Why it is here

100% cotton, labeled 3 DK (light), 50g (1.8oz) balls at 136yd (125m), published knit gauge 24 sts x 32 rows on 3.75mm (US 5) and crochet 21 sc x 24 rows on 3.75mm (US F/5), hand wash cool and dry flat. Twenty-four stitches on a 3.75mm needle against the 22 stitches on 4mm that the rest of this page publishes is a real half-step down, and over a sweater that difference compounds into inches. It is a lovely yarn - a hard twist, a sheen and genuine drape - and it is the yarn most crochet garment patterns in cotton are actually written for.

What you give up

Use it where its own gauge is specified, not as a DK substitute. Hand wash only is the other reason it is not a general-purpose DK.

What DK actually is

DK stands for double knitting, a British term that long predates the American category system. In Craft Yarn Council terms it is category 3 light: roughly 21 to 24 stitches over four inches on US 5 to 7 needles, sitting between sport and worsted.

Published gauge and put-up for the DK-weight yarns this site lists. Figures are from each manufacturer.

Twenty-two to twenty-four stitches is a narrower band than worsted's sixteen to twenty, but the needle size varies underneath it - and a yarn hitting 24 stitches on a 3.75mm needle is a different animal from one hitting 22 on a 4mm. DK vs worsted yarn has the full comparison against the category above.

The American DK problem

DK is the default weight for European patterns and a minority weight on American shelves, which is why this category is smaller than it should be and why so much of it is cotton or baby yarn.

  • Most big-brand American ranges go straight from sport to worsted, skipping DK entirely.
  • The DK that does get stocked is disproportionately cotton, because cotton garment patterns are written at this gauge.
  • Baby yarn is the other big DK category, which is why several picks here are sold as baby yarns - the gauge is the same whoever wears it.
  • Wool DK is genuinely scarce at supermarket prices, which is why the Berroco blend leads this page rather than a pure wool.
  • Substituting worsted for DK does not work without reworking the numbers - it is about one needle size, one hook size and four stitches over four inches.

Needles and hooks at this weight

What DK is good for

  1. Garments for mild weather, which is DK's whole reason for existing - warm enough to wear, fine enough not to be bulky.
  2. Baby and children's clothes, where worsted reads chunky and fingering takes forever.
  3. Colorwork, because the finer gauge gives more stitches to draw a motif with than worsted does.
  4. Summer tops in cotton or bamboo, where drape matters more than warmth.
  5. Granny squares and blankets where you want detail rather than speed.

How we picked

Ranked on published gauge first - because this category is full of yarns that are not quite the weight their label claims - then on fiber, yards per ball and the care label. We did not knit these against each other; every number above is the manufacturer's own published figure and is cited below. Prices come from the live price layer with the date they were checked.

Questions people actually ask

What is DK weight yarn?

DK stands for double knitting, and in Craft Yarn Council terms it is category 3 light - roughly 21 to 24 stitches over four inches on US 5 to 7 needles. It sits between sport and worsted, and it is the default weight for most British and European patterns.

What is the best DK weight yarn?

Berroco Vintage DK for most garments - 288 yards to a 100g ball at 22 stitches to four inches on a US 6, with 40% wool for body and enough acrylic and nylon to go in a washing machine. For cotton, Paintbox Cotton DK; for baby knitting, Bernat Softee Baby.

Is DK the same as 8 ply?

Yes, in practice. Australian and New Zealand 8-ply and British DK describe the same weight. The ply number is historical and does not describe thickness directly, which is why the Craft Yarn Council number on an American ball band is the more reliable reference.

What needle size do you use for DK yarn?

US 6 (4mm) is the default and the size most DK bands name. US 5 (3.75mm) is the fine end - Patons Grace publishes its gauge there - and US 7 (4.5mm) is the boundary with worsted and the size to go up to if your swatch comes out tight.

Can I use worsted yarn instead of DK?

Not without reworking the pattern. The gap is about one needle size, one hook size and four stitches over four inches, which compounds into inches across a garment. If you must substitute, reknit the gauge swatch and recalculate the stitch counts rather than hoping the ease absorbs it.

What is the difference between DK and light worsted?

Light worsted is marginally heavier - the overlap between category 3 and category 4. Several yarns are labeled DK / light worsted because they genuinely straddle the boundary, including Berroco Vintage DK. Treat the published gauge as the real answer and the label as a hint.

Why is DK yarn hard to find in American stores?

Because American patterns are mostly written in worsted. Big domestic ranges tend to jump from sport straight to worsted, so the DK that does get stocked is disproportionately cotton and baby yarn - both categories where patterns are traditionally written at this gauge.

What hook size do you use for DK yarn?

F (4mm) to G (4.5mm), which is what the ball bands name. Paintbox Cotton DK and Berroco Vintage DK both publish F/4mm. At this gauge the hook's head shape matters more than its size - a tapered head splits plied DK more readily than an inline one.
