The short answer
DK yarn crochets on roughly 3.5mm to 4.5mm, and 4mm is the size most DK patterns name. Buy a hook with a grip if you will be working for more than an hour, and choose the head shape by your own tension: in-line if you crochet tightly, tapered if your hook keeps splitting the yarn. The size matters less than most people expect - the head shape and the grip matter more.

What size hook DK actually wants
In the standard weight system, category 3 light - DK and sport - is crocheted on roughly 3.5mm to 4.5mm. Manufacturers publish their own figure within that band, and it is worth reading rather than assuming.

Head shape matters more than size here
DK is fine enough that a hook's head profile changes the fabric noticeably, and softly plied DK is exactly the yarn that splits.
- In-line heads sit flush with the shaft, so there is no wider shoulder to force through a tight stitch. Best if you crochet tightly.
- Tapered heads narrow before the shaft and catch the whole strand, so they split less. Best if your hook keeps diving into the ply.
- Rounded heads sit between the two and are the usual compromise.
- Whichever you choose, stay with it for the project - switching mid-piece changes your gauge.

What DK is good for
- Garments. DK is the weight most crochet garment patterns use - see best crochet hooks for garments.
- Amigurumi with fine detail, worked tighter than the band suggests so the stuffing does not show.
- Baby items, where DK is the standard weight.
- Blankets that are not enormous, at a fabric weight that still drapes.
- Not dishcloths. Worsted cotton is the right tool there.
Going tighter for amigurumi
Amigurumi is the one common DK job where the ball band's hook is deliberately wrong. The fabric has to be dense enough that stuffing does not show through, which usually means dropping a size or two below the published figure.

What size crochet hook for DK yarn?

Is a 4mm hook the same as a G hook?
In US lettering a G-6 is 4mm, and that is the pairing manufacturers print for DK. Letters vary slightly between brands at some sizes, so buy on the millimeter figure.
What hook do I use for DK amigurumi?
Smaller than the ball band says - usually 3.5mm or 3.25mm with DK. Amigurumi needs a fabric dense enough that the stuffing does not show through, which means working tighter than the published gauge.
Why does my DK yarn keep splitting?
Softly plied DK splits on an in-line or sharply pointed head. A tapered head narrows before the shaft and catches the whole strand, which is the fix. Guiding the hook rather than pushing it helps too.
Can I use a DK hook size for worsted?
No - worsted is thicker and crochets on roughly 5mm to 5.5mm. Using a 4mm hook with worsted gives a stiff, dense fabric and tired hands.
