The short answer
Worsted weight crochets on roughly 5mm to 5.5mm, and the manufacturers' own bands name one or the other. Buy a hook with a grip: worsted is the weight people crochet for hours at a time, and grip is what decides whether your hands last the blanket. Head shape comes second, and it is decided by whether your yarn splits.

The spread is the useful part: the same weight category is published on hooks from 5mm to 6mm, and the gauges range from 12 to 16 single crochet over 4in. Worsted is a band, not a point - so swatch rather than trusting the category.
How to choose the head
- Splitting? Take a tapered throat - it catches the whole strand rather than diving into the ply.
- Can't get the hook in? Take an in-line head - it has no wider shoulder to force through.
- Neither problem? A rounded head is the compromise and it is fine.
- Whichever you pick, keep it for the project. A blanket crocheted half on one head shape and half on another will show it.
What worsted is used for
- Blankets and afghans - the single commonest crochet project there is.
- Granny squares, where worsted is effectively the default.
- Amigurumi, worked several sizes tighter than the band says.
- Hats and scarves, fast and forgiving.

Hook size is a design control
Within the worsted band, moving a half size changes the fabric more than it changes the measurements.

That is why two manufacturers can print different hooks for the same weight - they are describing different fabrics. Decide which fabric you want, then swatch for it.

What size crochet hook for worsted weight yarn?
Roughly 5mm to 5.5mm. The yarns we list publish hooks from 5mm (H-8) to 6mm (J-10) for the same weight category, so read the band and then swatch - the choice within that range is a fabric decision.
Is an H or I hook better for worsted?
An H (5mm) gives a denser, firmer fabric and an I (5.5mm) a slightly looser one. Use H for amigurumi and bags, I for blankets, and J (6mm) when you want drape.
Do I need an ergonomic hook for worsted?
If you crochet blankets, it is the single most useful upgrade. Worsted means long sessions, and sustained pinch force on a thin bare shaft is what causes the ache in the thumb web.
Why does my worsted acrylic split?
Soft, loosely plied acrylic splits on in-line and sharply pointed heads. A tapered throat narrows before the shaft and catches the whole strand, which is the fix.
Can I use blanket yarn instead of worsted?
Not in a worsted pattern. Chenille blanket yarn is category 6 super bulky - two categories heavier - so it changes every measurement and needs a much larger hook.
