DK vs Worsted Yarn
One category apart, and further apart in practice than that sounds. Here is the gap, in the manufacturers' own numbers.

The short answer
DK is category 3 light and worsted is category 4 medium - one step apart on the standard scale. DK knits at roughly 21 to 24 stitches over 4 inches on US 5 to 7 needles; worsted knits at roughly 16 to 20 stitches on US 7 to 9. The practical difference is about one needle size, one hook size and four stitches over four inches. Substituting one for the other without reworking the numbers changes the finished size by around 15 percent, which is a size on a garment.
The two categories, side by side
The Craft Yarn Council's weight system defines both by knitted gauge over four inches in stockinette, not by diameter or by yardage. These are the published bands.

Two things in that table catch people out. The bands touch: US 7 and 4.5mm appear in both rows, which is why some yarns are honestly described as either. And the crochet hook figures are larger than the knitting needle figures for the same yarn, because a crochet stitch needs more room than a knit stitch.
What the actual ball bands say
Categories are bands, and real yarns sit at points inside them. Here are the published figures for yarns this site lists, so you can see the spread rather than take the category on trust.

The Cascade line is the useful one. It is sold as DK to light worsted and knits at 20 stitches on a US 7 - the exact point where the two categories meet. A yarn like that will pass in a pattern written for either, which is why it is such a common sweater yarn.
The gap, in one number
Across the yarns above, DK knits at about 23 stitches over four inches and worsted at about 17. That is six stitches, or roughly 26 percent more stitches per inch in DK.
- Stitch count. DK needs about a quarter more stitches to cover the same width.
- Needle and hook. One to two sizes up for worsted.
- Yardage per garment. Worsted covers more area per yard, so a worsted sweater takes fewer yards than a DK one - though each yard is heavier.
- Fabric. DK drapes; worsted has more body. This is the difference you feel rather than measure.
- Speed. Worsted is noticeably faster, which is why so many blanket patterns use it.
Substituting one for the other
You can, with arithmetic. What you cannot do is knit a DK pattern in worsted at the pattern's stitch counts and expect the stated measurements.
- Worsted into a DK pattern makes it bigger - around 15 percent at typical gauges, which on a 40in sweater is about 6in.
- DK into a worsted pattern makes it smaller by a similar margin, and the fabric will be looser than intended unless you go down a needle size.
- The fix in both directions is gauge, not hope. Swatch, measure, and then work the pattern's next size up or down - or recalculate the stitch counts from your own gauge.
- Two strands of DK held together land near worsted or a little above, and this works better in crochet than in knitting.
- Check yardage in yards, not skeins. Skein sizes vary from 85g to 198g across the yarns above.

Questions people actually ask
Is DK the same as worsted?
No. DK is category 3 light and worsted is category 4 medium - one step apart. The confusion comes from 'light worsted', which is a name for DK, not for worsted.
Can I substitute worsted for DK?
Only with the numbers reworked. At typical gauges worsted makes a DK pattern about 15 percent bigger, which is a full size on a garment. Swatch, then either work a smaller size or recalculate the stitch counts.
Is Aran the same as worsted?
Yes, both are category 4 medium. Aran is the British name. 'Light worsted', confusingly, is DK - one category lighter.
