Best Size G Crochet Hook

Four millimeters - unless it is 4.25. Two brands print two different sizes under the same letter, and both are telling the truth.

Clover Amour Crochet Hook, G-6 (4.0mm)

The short answer

Size G is 4.0mm - on Clover's hooks. On Boye's it is 4.25mm, printed on the company's own package. Both brands are telling the truth, because the US letter scale is not standardized between manufacturers, and the same split shows up at I: Clover's is 5.5mm, Boye's is 5.25mm. So buy on the millimeter figure and treat the letter as a label rather than a measurement. For a single 4mm hook, the Clover Amour at article 1045/G is the sensible default - a gripped handle, a rounded head, and the size printed in both systems. Go wooden if your DK is slippery, cushioned if your hands tire, and buy the ten-hook set instead if you will use three or more sizes.

1045/G

Who it suits

Anyone whose pattern says 4mm or G-6, anyone crocheting DK garments, and anyone who wants one good hook rather than a case.

Why it is here

Clover sells this as article 1045/G, Size G, 4.0mm - the letter and the millimeter both printed on the package, which is more than most of this category manages. Molded elastomer grip, latex free, on an aluminum shaft with a rounded head that sits between in-line and tapered. The grip is the reason to pay single-hook money: a wider handle takes less pinch force to hold, and DK garments are long projects. The rounded head is the safe default if you have no strong feeling about head shape yet.

What you give up

One tenth of the Amour set for roughly a seventh of the price, so if you will use several sizes the set wins on value. Rubber grips also perish over years in a way a bare aluminum shaft never does.

Prym Crochet Hook, G-6 (4mm)

Prym · Best for owning the size with a grip, cheaply

A rubber-handled 4mm hook at the lowest price here - the cheapest way to own this size with a grip rather than a bare shaft.

Size
G6 / 4mm, per the listing
Handle
Rubber
Shaft
Metal
Sold as
One hook, one size

Who it suits

Anyone who wants a grip rather than a bare shaft and does not want to spend more than they must.

Why it is here

Listed as size G6 / 4mm with a rubber handle on a metal shaft. It does the same job as the Clover for a little less, and the useful thing about it on this page is that it is a third manufacturer independently calling G 4mm - which matters when a fourth one calls it 4.25mm. If your only requirement is a 4mm hook you can hold comfortably, this meets it.

What you give up

Prym publishes less about this hook than Clover does - no head-profile description and no article-level detail - so you are buying on size and handle alone. The saving over the Clover is small enough that the better-documented hook is usually worth it.

Tulip ETIMO Rose Crochet Hook, 7/0 (4mm)

The cushioned Japanese hook at 4mm - sold as a 7/0, with no US letter on it anywhere.

Size
4mm - sold as Japanese size 7/0
Grip

One hook, one size
Made in

Who it suits

Anyone who already knows a soft grip helps, and anyone working slippery bamboo-blend DK where tip finish matters.

Why it is here

Sold as size 7/4mm - 4mm on the Japanese 7/0 numbering - with a cushioned rubber grip, a polished tip on Tulip's own hook profile, and made in Hiroshima. The grip is softer and a little thicker than the Clover elastomer, and the polish on the tip is what people notice first on fine, splitty yarn. It is also the clearest illustration of the numbering problem this page is about: nothing on the product says G.

What you give up

Twice the price of the Clover for a difference that is a preference rather than an upgrade. And because it carries no US letter, it is easy to buy the wrong size if you shop by number - Tulip's 5/0 is 3.00mm, not 5mm.

Lantern Moon Ebony Crochet Hook, G (4mm)

Lantern Moon Ebony Crochet Hook, G (4mm)

Lantern Moon · Best for slippery dk - bamboo-viscose, silk blends, mercerized cotton

A single ebony hook at 4mm - the wooden option at the size, and the one that grips a slippery bamboo-blend DK.

Size
US G (4mm)
Material
Ebony wood
Format
Single ended
Sold as
One hook, one size

Who it suits

Anyone whose stitches slide off an aluminum hook, and anyone buying a hook as a present.

Why it is here

Ebony, single ended, listed as US size G (4mm). The reason to want wood at this size specifically is the yarn: DK is where rayon-from-bamboo and mercerized cotton are common, and both are slick enough to slide on aluminum. A wooden surface holds a loop where metal lets it travel. It is also simply a nicer object than anything else on the page, which matters if it is a gift.

What you give up

Roughly twice the Clover for a hook with no grip - the shaft is the handle, so it does nothing for sore hands. Wood also wants keeping dry; never wash it. [Best wooden crochet hooks](/crochet-hooks/best-wooden-crochet-hooks) covers the category.

Clover Amour Crochet Hook Set

Clover Amour Crochet Hook Set

Clover · Best for anyone who will crochet more than one yarn weight

Ten aluminum hooks with a molded elastomer grip, covering 2.25mm to 6.0mm - the whole span most patterns for worsted and DK yarn ever ask for.

Sizes
10 hooks: B/2.25mm to J/6.0mm
Grip
Elastomer rubber, latex free
Shaft
Aluminum
Head
Rounded, between inline and tapered
Color coding
Handle color differs per size

Who it suits

Anyone moving between amigurumi, DK garments and worsted blankets.

Why it is here

Ten hooks, B/2.25mm to J/6.0mm, same elastomer grip and rounded head as the single above, color coded by size. The break-even against single gripped hooks is around five sizes, and any crocheter who works more than one weight passes that quickly. Buying the set also sidesteps the letter problem entirely, because every hook in it is a Clover and they all use one scale.

What you give up

A real outlay if all you need is a 4mm, and the set stops at 6.0mm - nothing above J, so blanket and jumbo work needs separate hooks. [Hook sets vs single hooks](/crochet-hooks/hook-sets-vs-single-hooks) has the arithmetic.

Boye Ergonomic Crochet Hook Set, Light and Medium Yarn (40-40044)

Boye Ergonomic Crochet Hook Set, Light and Medium Yarn (40-40044)

Boye's tapered throat - the American reference for the geometry that grabs the whole strand - now sold only with an ergonomic handle on it.

Handle
Molded ergonomic grip, color-coded by size
Model
40-40044

Who it suits

Nobody who came here needing a 4mm hook specifically.

Why it is here

Boye's own package for the 40-40044 set prints its sizes as US F / 3.75mm, US G / 4.25mm, US H / 5mm and US I / 5.25mm. Two of those disagree with Clover: Clover's G is 4.0mm and Clover's I is 5.5mm. Neither brand is wrong - the US letter scale simply is not standardized between manufacturers, and this set is the clearest published proof of it. A quarter of a millimeter sounds trivial and is about a third of the step between neighboring sizes, which is enough to miss a gauge.

What you give up

As a set it is well made, cheap and genuinely useful, and the tapered throat suits splitty yarn. The problem is only that its G is not the G a 4mm pattern means. If you own one already, measure before you swatch.

The letter is not a measurement

This is the thing worth knowing before you buy anything on this page, and it is the direct answer to what a size G hook actually is.

The same two letters, as published by two manufacturers on their own products.
LetterClover publishesBoye publishesAgree?
FNot published as a single here3.75mm-
G4.0mm (article 1045/G)4.25mm (40-40044 package)No
H5.0mm (article 1047/H)5mm (40-40044 package)Yes
I5.5mm (article 1048/I)5.25mm (40-40044 package)No

A quarter of a millimeter sounds like nothing. It is roughly a third of the gap between one hook size and the next at this end of the scale, and it is enough to put you off a stated gauge - which on a garment compounds into inches. If your pattern names a millimeter, match the millimeter.

The crochet hook size chart has this site's full letter-to-millimeter table, and best needle gauges and rulers covers the tool that settles an unmarked hook in two seconds.

Three numbering systems, one 4mm hook

The letter problem is the second-worst thing about hook numbering. The worst is that three systems are in use at once, two of them using bare numbers that look like millimeters and are not.

The same 4mm hook across the systems in use on an American shelf.
SystemThis hookNotes

Metric4mmThe only figure that cannot be misread
Japanese7/0Tulip sells its 4mm ETIMO Rose as size 7/4mm
Japanese 5/03.00mm - not 5mmTulip's TER-06 is 5/0 and measures 3.00mm
Japanese 8/05.00mmTulip's TER-10 - the size a US H covers

The Japanese numbers run the opposite way from how they look: a bigger number before the slash means a bigger hook, so 7/0 is larger than 5/0 even though both start with a single digit. Best size H crochet hook covers the 5mm version of the same tangle.

What 4mm is actually for

The yarn bands are the best evidence of what a manufacturer thinks this hook is for.

Published crochet gauge for the DK-weight yarns this site lists. Figures are from Lion Brand.

Lion Brand Coboo51% cotton, 49% rayon from bamboo18 sc x 20 rows on G-6 (4mm)
  1. DK garments, which is the commonest job for this size and the weight most crochet garment patterns use.
  2. Baby items, where DK is the standard weight and a 4mm fabric is soft without being loose.
  3. Fine amigurumi, though usually worked a size or two tighter than this so the stuffing does not show - best crochet hooks for amigurumi covers it.
  4. Worsted, deliberately tightened. Dropping a worsted yarn to 4mm gives a firm, dense fabric for bags and baskets.
  5. Not blankets in worsted, where 5mm to 6mm is the band and 4mm would take forever and come out boardy.

Best crochet hook for DK yarn approaches the same ground from the yarn side, with the whole 3.5mm to 4.5mm band rather than this one size.

Head shape, briefly

Head profile changes how a hook behaves more than anything except size, and DK is fine enough and often softly plied enough that it shows.

  • In-line heads sit flush with the shaft, so nothing wider has to be forced through a tight stitch. Best if you crochet tightly.
  • Tapered heads narrow before the shaft and catch the whole strand, so they split the ply less. Best if your hook keeps diving into the yarn.
  • Rounded heads sit between the two - the Clover Amour's profile, and the right default if you have no complaint to fix.
  • Stay with one for a project. Switching head shapes mid-piece changes your gauge, which is a frustrating way to learn this.

Inline vs tapered crochet hooks has the full argument, and best size H crochet hook puts a bare in-line and a bare tapered hook side by side at 5mm, which is the cheapest way to find out which suits your hands.

Single or set

An honest page about one hook has to say when one hook is the wrong purchase, and at 4mm it often is.

A ten-piece gripped set spans 2.25mm to 6.0mm for roughly seven times the price of one gripped single, so the break-even sits around five sizes. Anyone who crochets amigurumi and garments and the occasional blanket will pass that inside a year. The set also sidesteps the problem at the top of this page, because every hook in it comes from one manufacturer on one scale.

Buy the single when you want a specific material or grip the set does not offer - the ebony and the cushioned Tulip are both things no set here includes - when you are replacing one lost hook, or when 4mm genuinely is the only size you use. Best crochet hooks ranks the sets.

How we picked

Ranked on published size first, because that is the thing this category gets wrong, then on grip and head profile, then on price. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's own published product information or, where a maker publishes no figure, from the retail listing that does - all cited below. We have not held or crocheted with any of these hooks and make no claim about how they feel. How we pick explains the method.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a G crochet hook in mm?

It depends on the brand, which is not a satisfying answer but is the true one. Clover publishes its G as 4.0mm on article 1045/G. Boye publishes its G as 4.25mm on the package of its 40-40044 set. Most patterns that say G mean 4mm, so match the millimeter rather than the letter.

Is a size G crochet hook 4mm or 4.25mm?

Both exist. The US letter scale is not standardized between manufacturers - Clover's G is 4.0mm and Boye's is 4.25mm, each printed by the maker. The same disagreement appears at I, where Clover publishes 5.5mm and Boye 5.25mm. At H the two agree, both at 5mm.

What yarn do you use with a size G crochet hook?

DK weight, mostly. Lion Brand Truboo and Coboo both publish their crochet gauge on G-6 (4mm). It is also used for fine amigurumi, baby items, and worsted deliberately tightened for bags and baskets.

Is a 7/0 crochet hook the same as a G?

In millimeters, close enough to matter: Tulip sells its 4mm ETIMO Rose as size 7/4mm, which is the Japanese 7/0. Since Clover's G is also 4.0mm, a Japanese 7/0 and a Clover G are the same hook. A Boye G at 4.25mm is not quite.

Is a 5/0 crochet hook 5mm?

No. 5/0 is Japanese numbering and measures 3.00mm - Tulip's TER-06 is sold as 5/0 (3.00mm). The Japanese size that matches a 5mm hook is 8/0. Bare numbers in this category are rarely millimeters.

What is the difference between G and G-6?

Nothing - they are the same size. The US system carries a letter and a number for each hook and prints them together, so G, 6 and G-6 all name the same hook. What they do not reliably tell you is the millimeter, which varies by brand.

Should I buy a single G hook or a set?

A single if 4mm is genuinely the only size you use, or if you want a material or grip no set offers - ebony and the cushioned Tulip are both single-only here. A set if you expect to use three or more sizes, since the break-even against gripped singles is around five, and a set keeps you on one manufacturer's scale.

Does a quarter of a millimeter really matter on a crochet hook?

On a dishcloth, no. On a garment, yes - 0.25mm is roughly a third of the gap between neighboring hook sizes at this end of the scale, which is enough to miss a published gauge, and a missed gauge compounds across every row of a sweater.
