The short answer
A blocking wire is a long stainless rod threaded through the edge stitches of a piece, then pinned at intervals. It distributes tension along the whole edge so the edge comes out straight, where pins alone pull at points and leave scallops between them.

Not a blocking tool. It is here because doing these two jobs the wrong way round is the commonest blocking mistake.

Why pins alone scallop an edge
A pin applies tension at one point. Between two pins the fabric relaxes and pulls inward, so the edge dries as a series of shallow curves with a small point at each pin.
On a textured blanket nobody notices. On the straight edge of a shawl or the side seam of a sweater panel it is the single clearest tell that something was made at home, and no amount of extra pins fixes it - more pins just gives you more, smaller scallops.
How to use them
- Weave in all ends first. Blocking sets them - see how to weave in ends.
- Soak the piece in cool water for 15 to 20 minutes with a wool wash.
- Press the water out in a towel. Never wring.
- Thread the wire through the edge stitches while the piece is damp, taking one stitch every inch or so along a straight edge.
- Lay it out and pin the wire, not the fabric, placing T-pins along the inside of the wire.
- Measure before you leave it. A wire makes it easy to pull an edge longer than you meant to.
- Leave until completely dry, then unpin, slide the wires out and let it rest.

Straight wires against flexible ones
Straight wires are stiff rods. They are what you want for a straight edge and they are all most people ever need.
Flexible wires are thinner and bend, which is what a curved edge - a circular shawl, a scalloped border you actually want scalloped, a crescent - requires. If your shawls are crescents rather than triangles, that is the set to look for, and it is a different purchase.
Pins: the detail that ruins a project
T-pins must be rustproof. A pin left in wet wool for two days that is not rustproof leaves an orange mark that does not wash out, and it will be in the middle of a finished shawl.
- Stainless or nickel-plated only. Ordinary dressmaking pins are neither.
- T-pins rather than straight pins. The crossbar gives you something to grip and stops the pin sinking into foam.
- More than you think. A shawl edge takes a pin every three or four inches even with wires.
- Check them before every use. One rusty pin in the tin is enough.
What blocking wires cannot do
They cannot make acrylic block. Wet blocking works by relaxing fibers so they set in a new position, and acrylic springs back - see best acrylic yarn for why steam is the only option there.
They also cannot rescue a gauge error. If a shawl is four inches short, stretching it on wires will hold until the first wash and then relax. That is a gauge problem, and blocking is not the fix.

What are blocking wires for?
Threading through the edge stitches of a piece so tension is distributed along the whole edge. Pins alone apply tension at points, so the fabric relaxes between them and the edge dries scalloped.
Do I need blocking wires?
For shawls, lace and sweater panels, they make a visible difference. For blankets, granny squares, socks and anything acrylic, they do nothing useful.
What is the difference between straight and flexible blocking wires?
Straight wires are stiff rods for straight edges and cover most needs. Flexible wires bend and are what a circular, crescent or deliberately curved edge requires.
Do blocking pins rust?
Ordinary dressmaking pins do, and a pin left in a wet shawl for two days leaves an orange mark that does not wash out. Use stainless or nickel-plated T-pins only, and check the tin before each use.
Can you use blocking wires on acrylic?
There is no point. Acrylic does not take a wet block - it springs back to the shape you knitted. Steam blocking is the only method that works on it, and it is permanent and easy to overdo.
