Clover Takumi Bamboo Circular Needle, US 10.5 (6.5mm), 29in

The short answer

US 10.5 is 6.5mm. It sits in the middle of the bulky band, which the Craft Yarn Council puts at 5.5 to 8mm, and it is the last US size before an unusually large step: the scale runs 10 (6mm), 10.5 (6.5mm), 11 (8mm), so there is no US number at all for 7mm or 7.5mm. Buy a bamboo fixed circular as the default, because at this diameter a stitch is heavy enough to travel on a slick needle. Buy 24in to 29in of cable for a hat, cowl, scarf or sweater and 32in or more for a blanket. For straights, buy 13in rather than 9in - 9in holds about 31 stitches at this gauge and a bulky scarf is most of that already. And check your interchangeable set first: unlike the fine and jumbo sizes, every set we list reaches 6.5mm.

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a bulky hat, cowl, scarf or sweater, and anyone whose ball band names 6.5mm or US 10.5.

Why it is here

US 10.5 (6.5mm) bamboo, 29in, from the Takumi circular line Clover also sells in 24in and 48in at this size. Bamboo is the right default at bulky gauge for one reason that gets more true as the needle gets fatter: a 6.5mm stitch has real mass, and a slick needle lets it travel when you set the work down. Bamboo grips enough to hold. Twenty-nine inches is the forgiving length - long enough for a sweater body or a generous cowl, and enough cable to work sleeves by magic loop without fighting it.

What you give up

Slower than steel, which matters if you knit at speed, and a bamboo join is never as smooth as a machined one. Twenty-nine inches is also more cable than a narrow scarf needs, and still short of what a full blanket wants - that is the 32in steel below.

Who it suits

Anyone casting on a throw, a wide wrap or a blanket in bulky yarn.

Why it is here

US 10.5 (6.5mm) surgical stainless tips, 32in (80cm), model 7032-10.5, on ChiaoGoo's memory-free multi-strand steel cable with a nylon coat, from a line sold in 16in through 40in at this size. At roughly three and a half stitches to the inch a 40in-wide blanket is about 140 stitches, and that will not sit on a 24in cord without stretching the fabric - which distorts both the look and any gauge you try to measure. The memory-free cable matters more as the project gets heavier, because a cord that holds its coil fights the fabric the whole way.

What you give up

More than twice the price of the bamboo above, and slick steel is the opposite of what a heavy bulky stitch wants. For a scarf it is overkill.

ChiaoGoo Patina Bamboo Double Point Needles, US 10.5 (6.5mm), 6in

Bamboo double points at 6.5mm, for closing a bulky hat crown without shedding stitches off the idle needles.

Moso bamboo, patina finish (obtained with thermal heat)
Tips
Precisely tapered, hand-crafted
Format
Double pointed, worked in the round
Model
1036-10.5

Who it suits

Anyone knitting a bulky hat in the round who has decreased past what a circular can hold.

Why it is here

Six-inch bamboo double points at US 10.5 (6.5mm), Moso bamboo with the patina finish obtained by thermal heat, precisely tapered hand-crafted tips, model 1036-10.5. A hat worked in the round gets too small for a circular at the crown and double points are the standard answer. Bamboo rather than steel is the clear call here: double-point work means idle needles hanging out of the fabric, and at 6.5mm a bulky stitch will slide off a slick one unaided.

What you give up

Double points take practice, and six inches is short for anything but a crown or a mitten top. If you would rather not learn them, magic loop on the 29in circular does the same job with one needle.

Who it suits

Anyone taught on straights, and anyone knitting flat panels to seam.

Why it is here

A pair of 13in bamboo single points at US 10.5 (6.5mm), tapered, flat knitting only. Length is the specification that matters on a straight needle and it is the one people get wrong. At roughly three and a half stitches to the inch, 13 inches holds about 45 stitches before they crowd the tip - comfortably more than the 20 to 30 a bulky scarf needs, with working room left over.

What you give up

Straights only knit flat, so a hat or cowl in the round is out, and the weight of a growing bulky project hangs off your wrists rather than resting in your lap.

Who it suits

Anyone buying more than one or two needles this year.

Why it is here

Tips from US 2 to 15 (2.75-10mm) with 5in tips on the memory-free Red Lace cable system. The reason it is on this page is the contrast: at [US 1](/knitting-needles/best-us-size-1-knitting-needles) and [US 2](/knitting-needles/best-us-size-2-knitting-needles) the sets run out below you, and at [US 17](/knitting-needles/best-us-size-17-knitting-needles) they run out above you. At 6.5mm they do not run out at all, so if you own any set you probably already have this size and need nothing from this page.

What you give up

A large upfront price, steel tips throughout with the grip problem that implies at bulky gauge, and 5in tips are short for large hands.

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 10.5 (6.5mm), 9in

Clover Takumi Bamboo Single Point Needles, US 10.5 (6.5mm), 9in

Clover · Best for swatches and very narrow pieces

The same bamboo straight four inches shorter - cheaper, and short enough that a bulky scarf crowds the tip.

Size
US 10.5 (6.5mm)
Length
9in
Material
Bamboo
Point
Tapered
Format
Single point - flat knitting only

Who it suits

Nobody knitting a bulky scarf, which is what most people buy a US 10.5 straight for.

Why it is here

A pair of 9in bamboo single points at US 10.5 (6.5mm). The material and the size are right and the length is the problem. At about three and a half stitches to the inch a 9in needle holds roughly 31 stitches, and a plain bulky scarf is 20 to 30 stitches before you count the room you need to actually work them. That puts it right at the edge, which in practice means stitches crowding the tip and sliding off the end all evening. The 13in pair above costs about a dollar more.

What you give up

Genuinely useful for gauge swatches, a narrow bulky cowl panel or a child's scarf. Just not the pair to buy if you are only buying one.

Where 6.5mm sits

The Craft Yarn Council puts bulky, category 5, at 5.5 to 8mm - US 9 to US 11. Six and a half millimeters is the middle of that band, which makes US 10.5 the most central bulky needle there is.

Best US size 10 knitting needles and best US size 11 knitting needles are the built pages either side, and the needle size chart has every conversion.

The gap above this size, which catches people out

This is the fact worth taking away from the page. Everywhere else in the middle of the scale the steps are a quarter or a half millimeter. Between US 10.5 and US 11 the step is a full millimeter and a half, and nothing lives in between.

  • There is no US number for 7mm. Needles at 7mm are made and sold - they are simply labeled in metric, with no US equivalent to print.
  • The same is true of 7.5mm. Both sizes are common in European and British ranges.
  • So a pattern that calls for 7mm has no US-labeled needle. If the pattern is translated or European in origin, you buy a metric-labeled needle or you swatch on 6.5mm and 8mm and pick the closer one.
  • Going 10.5 to 11 is a bigger change than it looks. A millimeter and a half at this gauge moves the fabric noticeably - usually about half a stitch per inch, which compounds across a garment.
  • Buy on the millimeter figure, always. It is the number that cannot be ambiguous, and at this end of the scale the US numbering is the confusing one.

The yarns that name this size

Bulky yarn labels cluster at 6mm, 6.5mm and 8mm, and the differences between those three are what decide whether a pattern works.

Published recommended needle and gauge on the bulky and super bulky yarns this site lists. Figures are from each manufacturer.

Bernat Blanket6 Super Bulky8mm (US 11)8 sts x 13 rows / 4in
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick6 Super BulkyUS 13 (9mm)9 sts x 12 rows / 4in

Two of the yarns this site lists name 6.5mm outright, and both are category 5 bulky rather than super bulky - which is the practical line. If your yarn says super bulky on the band, you are probably looking at US 11 or US 13 instead. Best chunky yarn covers the shelf from the yarn side.

addi Click TurboUS 4-15 (3.5-10mm)Yes
Knitter's Pride Dreamz DeluxeUS 4-11 (3.5-8.0mm)Yes

This is the opposite of the situation at the ends of the scale. At US 1 and US 2 the sets stop above you, and at US 17 they stop below you. Six and a half millimeters sits inside all three published ranges, so check the case before buying anything - this is a size you may already own.

Material and format at bulky gauge

  1. Bamboo over metal, as a default. A 6.5mm stitch is heavy, and a slick needle lets it slide off when the work is set down. The argument gets stronger as the needle gets fatter.
  2. Weight starts to matter. The needle itself is thick at 6.5mm, and bulky projects are usually large. A bamboo pair is noticeably lighter in the hand than a steel one over a long evening.
  3. Steel wins on cable length. For a blanket you want 32in or more of memory-free cord, and that is where the ChiaoGoo earns its price despite the slicker tips.
  4. Tip sharpness matters less here than at fine gauges. Bulky stitches are large and loose; you are not fighting to get into them.
  5. Straight-needle length is the thing people get wrong. Work it out rather than guessing: stitches per inch times the width you need, plus room to work them.

Bamboo vs metal knitting needles has the comparison across every size, and best needles for chunky yarn approaches the same range from the yarn side.

What people knit at 6.5mm

  1. Bulky hats and cowls, the fastest finished object in the craft and the commonest reason this size is bought.
  2. Bulky sweaters, where 14 stitches to four inches means a body that grows visibly each evening.
  3. Scarves, usually 20 to 30 stitches wide, which is why straight-needle length matters.
  4. Throws and lap blankets, the 32in-cable project.
  5. Worsted held double, which lands around this gauge without buying bulky yarn - a good use for leftovers.
  6. Velvet and chenille garments, where Bernat Velvet's published 6.5mm is the gauge that makes a wearable fabric rather than an upholstered one.

Buying without getting the wrong needle

  • Buy on the millimeter figure. US 10.5 is 6.5mm. The sizes either side are 6.0mm and 8.0mm.
  • Watch the notation. This size is written US 10.5, 10 1/2 and 10½ depending on the seller, and all three mean the same needle.
  • Do not assume 10.5 rounds to 11. The gap between them is 1.5mm, the biggest step in the middle of the scale.
  • Check the cable length in the title rather than the photo. The same tip size is sold on four different cords at this size and the pictures look identical.
  • Metric-only listings are normal from European brands. A needle sold as 6.5mm with no US number is a US 10.5 - and one sold as 7mm has no US number at all.
  • If you own a set, you already have it. All three sets above cover 6.5mm.

How we picked

Ranked on the published specification in the order that matters at this gauge: material first, because grip and weight decide the experience at 6.5mm; then cable or needle length against the project; then tips. Every figure above comes from the manufacturer's own product line documentation or, where a maker does not publish it, from the retail listing - all cited below. We have not knitted with any of these needles and make no claim about how they feel. How we pick explains the method.

Questions people actually ask

What size is a US 10.5 knitting needle in mm?

US 10.5 is 6.5mm. The sizes either side are US 10 at 6.0mm and US 11 at 8.0mm. You will also see it written 10 1/2 or 10½ - they are the same needle.

What yarn do you use with size 10.5 needles?

Bulky, category 5, which the Craft Yarn Council puts at 5.5 to 8mm. Lion Brand Rewind publishes its gauge on US 10.5 and Bernat Velvet on 6.5mm, so if either is your yarn this is the needle the manufacturer intends. Super bulky yarn usually wants US 11 or US 13 instead.

Is there a US size for 7mm knitting needles?

No. The US scale runs 10.5 (6.5mm) straight to 11 (8mm), so 7mm and 7.5mm needles exist only with metric labels. If a pattern calls for 7mm, swatch on 6.5mm first - it is the closer size and the denser fabric, which is usually the safer miss.

What is the difference between US 10.5 and US 11?

A millimeter and a half - 6.5mm against 8.0mm - which is the largest step anywhere in the middle of the needle scale. It is enough to move your gauge by roughly half a stitch per inch, so the two are not interchangeable on a garment.

Do interchangeable needle sets include US 10.5?

All three we list cover it. The ChiaoGoo TWIST Red Lace Complete runs US 2-15, the addi Click Turbo US 4-15 and the Knitter's Pride Dreamz Deluxe US 4-11, and 6.5mm sits inside every one of those ranges. Check your case before buying a single needle.

Are bamboo or metal needles better at 6.5mm?

Bamboo, unless you need a long cable. At this diameter a stitch is heavy enough to slide off a slick needle when you set the work down, and the bamboo needle is lighter in the hand on what is usually a large project. Steel wins only where cable length matters, which means blankets.

Are 9 inch straight needles long enough at US 10.5?

Barely. At about three and a half stitches to the inch a 9in needle holds roughly 31 stitches, and a plain bulky scarf is 20 to 30 stitches before you count working room. Buy the 13in pair instead - it is about a dollar more and holds around 45.

What cable length do I need for size 10.5 needles?

Twenty-four inches as a single purchase, which covers hats, cowls, scarves and sweater bodies. Go to 32 inches or more for a blanket: at roughly three and a half stitches to the inch a 40in-wide blanket is about 140 stitches, and a short cord will stretch the fabric and distort any gauge you measure.
