What a kit is actually selling you
Almost every craft kit is the same materials you could buy separately, plus a pattern, plus packaging, at a markup. That is not a scandal - convenience is worth something, and a gift needs to arrive as one object.

Hook size, which kits routinely get wrong
Amigurumi is worked deliberately tight so that stuffing does not show through the fabric. That means a hook one or two sizes below what the ball band recommends.
- Worsted weight yarn (CYC 4): ball band says 5.0-5.5mm; amigurumi uses 3.5-4.0mm.
- DK weight (CYC 3): ball band says 3.5-4.5mm; amigurumi uses 2.5-3.25mm.
- Cotton, worsted: 3.5-4.0mm, and the crisp stitch definition is why cotton dominates the craft.
Those band figures come from the Craft Yarn Council standard. A kit that supplies a 5mm hook with worsted yarn is supplying the wrong hook, and the resulting toy will have visible gaps.

Yes, more than for yourself. A kit arrives as one object with instructions, which is what a gift needs to be, and a recipient who has never crocheted has no way to assemble a parts list.
