The short answer
Buy a single bare aluminum hook in the size your pattern names. A hook has to be smooth, rigid and the size it claims, and none of those cost much - which is why the cheap end of this category is genuinely good rather than a compromise. Spend more only for a grip, which matters if you crochet for hours, and never buy a steel set by mistake.
What to look for on a budget
Before the picks, the short list of what a low price can and cannot deliver.
- Accurate sizing. Your gauge depends on the hook actually being the size printed on it. Branded hooks are reliable here; unbranded ones are the usual offenders.
- A smooth head and throat. Any roughness catches the yarn on every stitch for the life of the hook. This is cheap to get right and obvious when it is wrong.
- A head shape that suits your problem. In-line for tight stitches, tapered if your yarn splits - and neither costs more than the other.
- A size marking that lasts. Etched or printed on the thumb rest.
- Rigidity. Fine hooks in soft materials flex, which is why very small sizes are made in steel.
- Not: a case, a set, or exotic materials. Those are the parts the price is attached to.

Where a low price genuinely costs you
- Your hands, over long sessions. A bare shaft is the cheapest hook and the hardest on your thumb web. If you crochet blankets, the grip is not a luxury - see ergonomic vs aluminum crochet hooks.
- Unbranded multi-packs with unverifiable sizing. A pack of fourteen hooks for less than one branded hook is tempting and the sizes are the thing nobody checks.
- Very large sizes in cheap plastic, which flex noticeably under a chunky yarn's tension.
A budget starter kit
- One 5mm hook, which is what most beginner patterns and tutorials use.
- One cheap light-colored yarn, so you can see your own stitches.
- A second hook in a different head shape, once you know whether your problem is splitting or tight stitches.

When to stop buying cheap
At the point where you are crocheting often enough that your hands notice. That is a different threshold for everyone, and it is the only one worth spending on - a gripped set changes the experience of a long session in a way a better bare hook does not.

Are cheap crochet hooks any good?
Individual branded ones, yes. A hook needs to be smooth, rigid and accurately sized, and none of those are expensive properties. The risk is unbranded multi-packs, where the sizing is the thing nobody verifies.
What is the cheapest crochet hook worth buying?
A bare anodized aluminum hook with an in-line head, in the size your pattern names. It does everything a hook has to do; what it does not do is spare your hands over a long session.
How many crochet hooks do I need to start?

Is a cheap crochet hook set better value than single hooks?
