Best Lamps for Knitting and Crochet

It is almost never brightness. It is color accuracy, contrast and where the light is coming from.

The short answer

Buy a lamp with a published color rendering index of 90 or higher and an adjustable arm, and position it over your shoulder rather than in front of you. If you are working dark yarn or fine thread, a magnifier does more than extra brightness will. Lumens are the specification people shop on and the least useful one for this job.

The problem is contrast, not light

Knitting and crochet are read by looking at the shadows between stitches. A stitch is not a different color from its neighbor - it is the same yarn at a slightly different angle, and what your eye picks up is the shadow the angle casts.

That is why more light does not automatically help. A very bright light placed directly in front of you fills those shadows in and makes the fabric harder to read, not easier. Dark yarn is hard because dark fabric casts almost no visible shadow at all.

CRI, and why it is the number to shop on

Color rendering index measures how accurately a light source shows colors compared with daylight, on a scale to 100. It is the specification that separates a craft lamp from a bright bulb.

The two lamps above publish CRI figures - one states a color rendering index of 95. A lamp that publishes no CRI at all is telling you something by omission.

Color temperature

  • 2700K-3000K (warm white) is what most living rooms run. Pleasant, and it makes blues read as gray.
  • 4000K (neutral) is a reasonable compromise for evening work.
  • 5000K-6500K (daylight) shows color most accurately and feels clinical in a living room.
  • Adjustable is worth paying for, because the right answer changes with what you are doing.

For judging dye lots or matching a shade, go as close to daylight as the lamp allows. For a long evening of plain knitting, warmer is easier on the eyes and the color accuracy matters less.

Magnification, honestly

A magnifier helps with specific tasks and gets in the way of general knitting, so it is worth knowing which you are buying it for.

The pattern is clear: magnification suits static repair and fine work, not the continuous motion of ordinary knitting. A lamp with a magnifier on a swing arm that moves out of the way is the sensible shape.

Floor, table or clamp

  • Floor lamp - reaches over the shoulder of an armchair, which is the correct position. The best default for evening knitting.
  • Table lamp - only works if the table is beside and behind you, which most are not.
  • Clamp-on - excellent at a desk or a frame, and the most adjustable for a specific task.
  • Convertible - one lamp that does all three costs more and removes the guess.
  • Clip-on book light - genuinely useful in a car or a hotel, useless as a main light.

Cheaper things that help as much

  1. Work light-colored yarn at night and save the navy for daylight. This is free and it works.
  2. Put a contrasting cloth on your lap. A white towel under dark knitting makes the fabric's edge readable.
  3. Use more stitch markers than you think you need. If you cannot count dark stitches, mark them instead.
  4. Use a lifeline on anything complex, so a mistake made at 11pm is recoverable.

If it is not the light

Two things get blamed on lighting and are not lighting. The first is yarn choice: a very dark, very fuzzy yarn is hard to see under any lamp, and a mohair or brushed yarn is hard to see full stop.

The second is the tool. A polished metal needle reflects light and shows the stitch edge clearly; a dark wooden needle in dark yarn hides it. Working dark yarn on a light-colored needle is a real, free improvement - bamboo vs metal knitting needles covers the trade the other way.
