Be honest about what you are buying
Take a typical beginner kit apart and you find a hook, a small quantity of yarn, some stuffing, a pair of safety eyes and a tapestry needle. Bought separately, those cost a fraction of the kit price - and there is nothing dishonest about that, provided you understand what the premium is for.
The premium is instruction. A good kit chooses the project, sizes the hook to the yarn, and walks you through it. That is a genuine service if you have tried and stalled, and dead weight if you have not.
The single most useful feature: pre-started
The overwhelming majority of first crochet attempts fail in the same place - the magic ring, the adjustable loop that starts almost every amigurumi piece. It requires two hands doing unfamiliar things at once and it is genuinely fiddly.

- A tapestry needle. Small, essential for finishing, and frequently missing.
- Enough yarn. Some kits supply exactly the yardage with no margin, so one mistake means running out.
- Real instruction. A printed pattern is not instruction if you cannot yet read a pattern.
- Twenty hooks you will not use. A hook set inside a beginner kit inflates the price and the size, and a beginner uses one hook.
