Best Crochet Hooks for Hats
A hat is the fastest way to learn that hook size is a fit decision, not a comfort one.

The short answer
For a worsted-weight hat, start at 5mm to 5.5mm, and work the brim a half size to a full size smaller than the body so it grips. Hook size is the fit control on a hat: one size up adds noticeable circumference, and there is no seam to adjust afterwards. Swatch even though it is only a hat - especially because it is only a hat.

Why gauge matters more on a hat than on a scarf
A scarf that comes out two inches wider is a slightly wider scarf. A hat that comes out two inches wider does not stay on.
- A hat is a fixed circumference with no seam to take in and no ease to absorb an error.
- Small gauge errors multiply. Half a stitch per inch over a 21in circumference is more than an inch of finished size.
- Crochet fabric has less give than knitted fabric, so it forgives less.
- The crown depends on the gauge too - increase rounds worked at the wrong gauge produce a cone or a frill rather than a dome.
Swatch in the round if the hat is worked in the round. Most people's flat gauge and round gauge differ, and a hat is exactly the project where that shows.
Negative ease, which is the part patterns assume
A hat is normally made an inch or two smaller than the head it fits, so the fabric stretches slightly and grips. That is negative ease, and it is why a hat measured flat looks too small.

Head shape, and why it matters less here
- A hat is mostly plain stitches in the round, so the in-line against tapered argument is quieter than usual.
- In-line helps if you crochet tightly, which most people do at the brim.
- A tapered head splits less in a soft, loosely plied yarn - which many hat yarns are.
- Pick either and keep it for the whole hat. Changing mid-hat changes the gauge.
Yarn for a hat
A little wool content makes a better hat than pure acrylic, because wool has memory - the brim springs back instead of relaxing into a loose band over a winter of wear.
Against that, acrylic and wool-acrylic blends are machine washable, which matters a great deal for a garment worn against hair and skin. The blend above is the usual compromise. Best yarn for a hat covers the choice properly.
Common problems
- Hat rides up. The brim is too loose - go down a hook size for the brim.
- Crown peaks into a cone. Not enough increases, or increases too close together.
- Crown ruffles. Too many increases. Both are gauge-sensitive.
- Hat is too big. Almost always gauge. Re-swatch in the round.
- Brim flips up. Usually a stitch-pattern choice rather than the hook; a ribbed brim in front-post and back-post stitches flips least.
